maybe DV goes to him for advice? and he gives a really confusing answer and DV ultimately decides he has to do it; he's got no choice and the team needs him and what can happen really? and then WHAM. honestly, I think DS would have been harder for Koeman to talk around because he's a pretty stubborn guy deep down, but he was younger and not so cynical (obviously, this is what changed all that) so I can see him being talked around eventually.

I think DV's drive to succeed would work in Koeman's favor, which of course he'd know - like, if DV wanted it badly enough (and back then - yeah) he'd convince himself it would be fine, and hey, Mori said it was okay... or he sort of did... whatever, if Raul can handle it, so can he. also, yeah, for sure, I feel like DS got talked into it because he was pretty young and unsuspecting. also, you know, when DV actually came around to the idea, that miiiiight have influenced his thoughts...
and the Cesc thing just makes it all funnier to me.
you know Cesc comes back for vacation and is like "so we've been doing this WHOOPS can't talk about that actually," and all the Barca people are like "what? what? what are they using you for? okay it's time to get you back here stat."

I love this, because I usually think of DV and DS as fairly strong-willed, but with the right leverage, they could be convinced to do stupid shit like this. Koeman could easily play off DV's drive to succeed, as well as his stupid rivalry with Raul - if Raul can handle it, so can he, like you said, which is a great way of articulating it. and yeah, DS being young, maybe still a little trusting. and once DV tells him he wants to do it, of course, it's a whole new ball game.
