HOLY CRAP

Ok, what a crazy day so far. We got up early this morning and got out the door about 7:30 to head up to Yoder. Its the little Amish community about 30 miles from here and they have a great restaurant that has the BEST biscuits and gravy ever. Also, we were there to pick up some meat that we had ordered from the processing plant, 1/4 of a cow and 1/2 a hog. It only took about 30 minutes to get there as usual but a little snow storm was moving in. When we left the house, nothing was on the ground, and it was just a little windy. When we pulled into Yoder the snow was blowing, but not sticking to the ground. By the time we got out of the restaurant and over to the meat store about 1/4 inch had accumulated and the wind had picked up a lot. We got everything together and left Yoder about 8:30 plus about 350lbs of meat in the back. I had to drive a little slower because the snow was blowing so much and visibility was about 100 feet at best, however, once we crossed the county line and were about 15 miles from home things got really bad. I had to slow down to about 20 mph and I couldn't even see the lines on the road at all. Luckily I was able to spot our exit in time but once we got into Wichita it got even worse. The wipers had so much ice frozen on them that all they were doing was moving the water/melting snow around on the window. After a few minutes of blindly driving and using the light poles to mark the side of the road I came upon a little caravan of cars all driving about 10 mph. I decided there was strength in numbers and pulled behind the huge Yukon. At this point, there was at least 1 inch of snow on the road, but I couldn't really tell as the only thing I could make out was the Yukon.

I was able to follow them about halfway home, but they all started turning off at various exits until it was just me. We passed at least 4 stranded motorists and 2 wrecks. The road at this point started to clear up a little bit, ie I could see a little bit of asphalt instead of just white and was able to speed up. Then we came upon a sight for sore eyes and the reason the road had cleared up. A wonderful dumptruck with a huge dozer in front was clearing the way. We slowed down and followed him to our exit.

The roads in our area were very bad. Tons of slick spots and you were lucky to get moving when a light turned green, but we made it safely home. However, as I pulled in and parked I noticed a little problem. There was about 4 inches of snow in our yard. So I got out of the van, got the door open and then got the babies into the house. Next was the meat which was a struggle. 4 boxes with 100lbs of meat didn't seem so bad until I got over to the other side of our house. As you can see in the little pic, this side had a huge snowdrift of about 10 inch. And the back steps were non-existent as the snow had all accumulated right there.

Once everything was in the house and I had a chance to take the layers off, it was now 11:30. 3 hours for a 30 minute trip thanks to a little snow. Ok a lot of snow. As I type this its about 3:30 and the snow keeps on coming. We got about 6 inch, but that snow drift keeps growing. Hope you are all nice and warm wherever you are.

Also, kaishay we got your card, thank you so much, but it didn't have a return address. Can you please email it to Michelle. Thanks.
