While I wait for the end of SKU ep28 to load...
Read James Baldwin's Sonny Blues for class. One of the rare times I'll say I liked the writing and kept reading to find out what would happen. Really hoping this falls into Modernism; while last semester I dug their message of hopelessness, I found their writing really dull (ok, well fine, The Wasteland isn't exactly light reading).
Joan D Vinge's The Snow Queen
Engdahl's Enchantress From the Stars still remains my all time favorite sci-fi/fairy tale story, not that I've read much (only Vinge and Engdahl I think). But something about Enchantress' shifting tone/style just had me head over heels for it. The Snow Queen is one of those novels I started, stopped, and picked back up way (possibly years) later. I also have the pretty paperback version with cover art by Leo and Diane Dillon, which honestly makes the story that much more epic. (The Dillons also did the cover art for the original hardback versions of Garth Nix's Abhorsen series) I was about half-way through when I picked the book back up.
The story's not particularly fairy-tale heavy in narrative; just the general outline of the original fairy tale was there. (I was quite proud of myself for picking up on Sparks rubbing glass out of his eye at the end though, lol) Liked the functions of sybils, and want to know what happens after but I don't think I'm going to read the rest. The other novels don't continue the fairy-tale inspiration, and The Summer Queen sounds hella long. The section where Moon has to go across the wind tunnel was pretty lovely though.
Good book though. ...not quite sure why it was Nebula/Hugo/Something Award winner though (although i don't follow those awards really)
TokiKake (again) / Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Interesting to watch it with other people, because they laugh/react differently. Didn't cry this time though. XD Still confused on the timeline / mechanics of gaining jumps at the end though. I know I shouldn't over think it, but still! Watching it through again though allowed for picking up stuff didn't notice the first time, which is nice.
Revolutionary Girl Utena (Akio Car Ride Arc)
Pretty much there should be more Juri/Shiori interaction going on in this series. Kinda interested to see if Miki/Kozue's relationship can ever be bridged. Not in a shippy sense, which is different than my interest in Juri/Shiori. J/S also seems to have woefully little fic. Rather baffled by the gondola (which pretty much just seems like an elevator instead of having to climb all those steps) which leads to the same dueling arena? Naked!Anthy uniform tree symbolism is lost to me. Looking at wikipedia, apparently Anthy drawing the sword out of Utena means Utena can fight with her own power and not Dios'. But Dios descends in the first 2 battles of this arc. :/ Also, this has been bothering me. Since the first duel, Utena shouts, "Grant me the power to revolutionize the world!" And she continues to shout this despite never hearing about Anthy's mystical power being world revolution. So why is she yelling it?! (At this point, ok, sure, she probably has heard it, but in the beginning, no.)
As is why Touga and Akito are baring their chests while driving cars. (and wtf is with Akio jumping onto the hood of the car and looking all "DO ME"?) These car ride sequences baffle me everytime with the random shirtlessness (unless baring chest=sexuality=adulthood=?). Also, when Akito first was, "Doens't the throb of the car feel good?" my expression was "0_o". And now my suspicions have proved correct in ep 28! XD (really though, I can't imagine that those car rides would make anyone feel sexy) The Akito/Anthy relationship=HMMMMMMM. The Akito/Utena relationship I feel is quite different than the manga where it was really clear Utena was pretty smitten with him.
ETA: After finishing ep28: OOOOOH. It was Juri's sword wasn't it?! Why is there no fic for this ship? WHY. And Ruka's a douche being all, "LOL JURI I HAVE YOUR LOVE."
Also. Get rid of these Nanami filler episodes please. Think of all the time that could've been used to expand the Shiori/Juri plot! Music is wonderful though.
On Harry Potter. The topic came up at breakfast, and while many may love the series to death, it just never clicked for me. Sure, I devoured it when I first discovered it, but my interest has petered out, much like my interest in Twilight. This disinterest has nothing to do with my shipper tendencies either. I never read Deathly Hallows, and quite honestly, I'll see the movie before reading the book. The Obernewtyn Chronicles, His Dark Materials, and ASOIAF are more what catch my die-hard-fan interest. Of those though, Obernewtyn is the only one I've waited years for the next novel to come out on; HDM was already complete, and I'm late coming to ASOIAF.

Also. As much as I like it not being frigid at 5:10am, WHY HAS IT BEEN SO HOT? It's autumn! My Carmex is never this soft; it was practically super soft caramel!
