I.
On Friday night, I went to a friend-of-a-friend's 21st. There, I met a boy who told me he was in his 4th year of a 3-year degree. I remember laughing and thinking to myself, Thank God I've never failed a subject. I hope I never do.
Boy: Oh, but it's because I was working and studying part time.
Me: I see. (whilst thinking: Wow. I'm so glad I don't have to work to support myself.)
Boy: But I'm not working now.
Me: Oh? (I think I'd die if I had to juggle full time work with uni.)
Boy: Yeah. I don't have to, I can afford to bum around & collect youth allowance.
Me: And all that work experience will be good for you when you rejoin the workforce. (Hm. Work that will give you valuable industry experience is hard to come by as an undergrad.)
Boy: Exactly.
Me: Ah. (Jesus! I'm so fortunate and I take it all for granted!)
Boy: Come on, let's go get another drink.
Me: Okay! (Oh! Drink? Yay!)
Moral of the story? Alcohol is distracting.
II.
On the same night, J, a boy from high school who was also at the party, told me that I was the one who inspired him to do commerce/law. What? Apparently, during English one day, still clueless about what he wanted to do in uni, I spouted off at him all the merits of doing a combined law degree and managed to convince him that yes, comm/law was THE THING for him. Now, while I was flattered that I had so much sway (especially since J and I weren't friends and would probably say a grand total of 5 words to each other all year), I couldn't for the life of me remember ever having class with J, let alone telling him he should do comm/law. I told him as much.
Me: We had English together?
J: Yeah! What, don't you remember?
Me: Uh, no... sorry.
J: (looking a bit pained)
Me: English? Really?
J: (looks at me, deflated)
Moral of the story? Alcohol does nothing to improve my memory.
III.
Yesterday, in Real Property, I realised (not for the first time) that the law is not there to help people. It's there to provide structure and prescribe rules. Laws give order to society. If anything, it's the lawyers who help people (or, specifically, their clients) by finding ways to manipulate and get around the law.
Moral of the story? I don't know. I need a drink.
