Glimpse

He told everyone in his office that he needed a caffeine buzz, but anyone who had seen the paper knew where he was really going. The roads were closed, and a crowd surrounding the wrought iron gates to the park, steadily pouring in and out of the giant white tents that had been set up for the week. On a bench opposite he sat, sipping the hot beverage as he braved the cold February chill. The loud music from inside the tents softened and applause followed, the daylight dwindled and street lights started to flicker, but on the bench he remained content to wait. The crowds has vanished and his coffee cup was all but empty, sucking in a breath he turned to toss his cup. With a flash of blonde in the corner of his eye and the sound of her voice, he snapped back, if only to catch a brief glimpse, as she waited for her town car. The same honey blonde hair, and the blue eyes that seemed to sparkle so bright. There she stood the girl who had captured the hearts of the world so quickly. He watched her taking in how much she had changed and how much she was still the girl he had known. Content he smiled a sad smile, he'd gotten his glimpse as drops of rain started to fall. As he walked down the street a child was heard greeting her mother, the sounds giggles and laughter, and a frantic nanny apologising profusely. He turned the corner and a single tear crept down his cheek, unaware that she'd seen him too.. the blonde mother who held her child so closely to her chest, and held her gaze long after he had become a blur in the distance, her sights not leaving the the corner until hearing the sound of her name by the driver who held the door open. As the car drove off, she looked out to the the city wet and grey and then to the sleeping infant fast asleep in her arms. Pulling her daughter closer to her she cried. After all who could tell the difference between the tears and the rain.
