I found the plant!!!
Not long after we moved to GA I saw a plant that I loved. It's behind the front sign at a church. I was suprised that it had blooms in early October. I even called the church once and asked if they knew what the plant was, but they didn't. I finally figured out the right search keywords and looked at enough images to find it:
