Those of you who know me know that I have always been a fan of fru-fru coffees. I love lattes shots of different flavored syrups.
I've been a dedicated Starbucks fan from the first time I walked into one. They smell wonderful and the coffee drinks are so good. I didn't like the stupid names for the drink sizes, but I dealt with that. The one thing that has always bothered me about Starbucks is the price. I know it's good, but paying around $4.00 for a "Grande" 16oz coffee is a bit over the top.
I haven't been in a Dunkin Donuts in years. I remember going there as a child. When Dad was in town he liked take us to school in the morning and that usually included a stop for breakfast somewhere. I didn't drink coffee at that age yet, but I remember that it smelled good.
On Wednesday Dunkin Donuts opened a new store at the end of the strip of stores where Wolf works. I decided to give them a shot this morning. I have to say that I am very impressed. I got a large (20oz) decaf ('cause I have to) Latte Light with coconut flavoring for $3.95. The flavorings they use are not syrups so they don't have any sugar or fake sugar. I got mine with 4 Splendas and it's got just the right sweetness for me and the coconut flavor is wonderful.
One of the pluses of Starbucks is also the environment of the stores. As a child I don't remember Dunkin Donuts being much more than a white counter with orange and pink boothes to sit at. This new one is built more like Starbucks. It's got little tables inside and out and has a nice wood(?) counter, but they didn't loose the orange and pink classic Dunkin Donuts scheme. It's just less offensive now. The employees were very nice. The guy who made my drink watched me take my first sip to make sure it was sweetened to my taste.
The nutrition info on both the companies websites says they are about the same, 160 calories, no fat and about 14g of protein for 20oz so that doesn't have to play a part in my decision. I love that the flavor shots are completely sugar free. According to their website they are even preservative free. They have 9 different flavors (French Vanilla, Toasted Almond, Raspberry, Hazelnut, Coconut, Chocolate, Cinnamon, Caramel and Blueberry) and you can add up to 3 at no additional charge! They charge extra for flavor shots at Starbucks. Oh, and they have a drive through at this Dunkin Donuts, neither of the Starbucks close to me have a drive through.
I think I'm a Dunkin Donuts convert.
