"Congratulations, honey!" Joonmyun captures Minho's lips in warm kiss before he even makes it through the door.
"Hi! And thank you." Minho laughs against his husband's lips as he nudges him back into the entryway. "Just let me take my shoes off, and then you can continue congratulating me," he whispers in Joonmyun's ear.
Joonmyun squirms away with a laugh, hanging onto Minho's hand to tug him inside. "If you mean what I think you mean, how about after we eat? I have food on the stove."
"Ah," Minho nods as he stumbles after, kicking off his shoes at the hall rug. He didn't notice the apron tied over Joonmyun's loose T-shirt and jeans. The sharp scent of raw garlic sauteeing should have tipped him off, though. He chucks his work bag at the sofa, narrowly avoiding a pile of Joonmyun's discarded workout sweats on the nearest cushion. He must have gone for a quick run when he got home from work, before starting on vegetable soup that’s half assembled on the counters and stove.
Sure enough, the fresh scent of soap from the shower still lingers on Joonmyun's skin when Minho sidles up behind him to press a kiss to his nape. Just a quick peck, but Joonmyun elbows him away, reaching for a serrated knife to shred half a carrot over the minced garlic and diced chili in the skillet.
Minho just steps closer to slide one foot between Joonmyun's slippers and drapes himself over the curve of Joonmyun's back. "I wanted to tell you in person, surprise you or something, but I couldn't wait!"
Minho can't stop grinning as he feels Joonmyun's hum of understanding soak into his chest. He doesn't regret sending that text as soon as he got out of the conference meeting with his boss. In fact, he texted half of the people in his address book before he made it home, though Joonmyun was of course the first and Minho waited for his reply before sending the rest.
Joonmyun laughs, curling forward over the pan he's trying to stir. Minho braces his folded fingers around one of Joonmyun's shoulders for support so he can lean around to nuzzle the side of his face. Joonmyun's eyes crease at the corners in delight and Minho can't keep from dropping a kiss there as well as he sways them slowly side to side.
"I'm not surprised you got the promotion, you worked so hard for it!" Joonmyun lowers the flame of the burner and sets the glass lid on the pan once he’s added a pitcher of stock. "But--it feels like winning the lottery anyway, right? Like--!" He breaks off in another giggle as Minho nods against his shoulder, cheek pressed into the soft soap smell of his neck.
"Because promotion means a raise, and a raise means--!"
"Oh!" Joonmyun's mouth falls open with a soft gasp and he turns, bumping noses with Minho as he blinks in excitement. "I totally didn't think of--! Oh, Minho-yah do you really--!"
"I even stopped by the real estate office on my way home to grab some fliers! I'm sorry that--"
"No! No honey, don't apologize, you’re home now! Can we look at them right now?" Joonmyun shuffles his feet in a clumsy jig of excitement, his lips pursed in a hopeful pout that is so cute and so Joonmyun that Minho loses it. He claps a hand over his mouth this time as he laughs, the sound high and tight in his throat as Joonmyun joins in half a scale lower.
"I know, I know, after dinner," he says with a shake of his head since Minho is still too breathless to respond with words.
"During dinner?" Minho punctuates his suggestion with a soft hum, rubbing his palms over the curve of Joonmyun's shoulders. The thin wool of his cardigan is soft under Minho's palms but a little rough against his cheek when he presses his face against Joonmyun's neck again for a last squeeze. "I'll set the table! Can we use the candle sticks tonight?"
"Candles?" Joonmyun frowns with a teasing hum as he shakes the wooden spoon in his fist. "Planning your own celebration party, are you?" But he laughs again, collapsing forward and banging his knee against the handle of the oven when Minho just blinks back with an open mouthed stare of innocence. "I already pulled them out and dusted them, the silver ones from our anniversary. They're on the side table in living room if you want to find the tapers."
"Weren't they in the chest by the window? The box with the candles, I mean?" Minho leaps over a pile of half-graded essays Joonmyun brought home from school as he jogs the short distance across the open space of their apartment.
They keep most of the things they don't need to find that often in the chest of drawers, candles and a few holiday ornaments and medical papers and the spare flashlight and batteries. Minho's pretty sure he saw the cardboard box of paraffin candles in the bottom drawer the last time he opened it in search of a screwdriver.
"Maybe?" Joonmyun calls from the kitchen, projecting his voice over the hiss of the sink as he rinses something over the basin. "I checked but didn't see them. I was waiting til you got home to look for me."
"Yeah ok, I'll look." Minho kneels on the area rug in front of the bureau. He rescues a stray disc from the floor and slides it onto the coffee table where it won't get stepped on, just in case it's one of Kyuhyun hyung's games he left here. Minho really doesn't want to become a casualty of a revenge feud before he and Joonmyun get a chance to move into the new house they've been dreaming of buying together since they got married. (And in Minho's case, ever since they got engaged right after university, though he never told Joonmyun that because he didn't want to pressure his hyung who still finishing up grad school at the time.)
Needless to say, it's been a common goal for years now--reaching enough financial stability so they can move into a larger place and start a family. Family, Minho muses as he rummages under a crumpled linen table cloth in the drawer, we should get that painted on the front door once we move in somewhere. He's pretty sure Joonmyun will like the idea, too.
Joonmyun's been keeping a little notebook for months now. He scribbles down ideas and specifications for their dream home, from UV treated glass windows to chambray paint swatches to eco-friendly appliances and fixtures. They probably can't afford a floor boards to ceiling renovation right away, but they're both looking forward to the gradual evolution of their future house into a child friendly and personal haven.
Minho grabs two tapers from the box and fits them into the already polished candlesticks waiting on the sideboard. He lays out the table settings and locates Joonmyun's inspiration notepad as well before he hits the lights in the kitchen, all except for the spot lighting above the stove where Joonmyun is finishing up the soup.
Family = Love, Love = Family.
Minho inks it at the top of a clean page in the notepad, quickly flipping the cover and setting aside the pen when Joonmyun joins him at the table with a steaming bowl he just dished out from the rice cooker.
"I hope you're hungry, I cooked extra because I got excited and forgot to stop chopping vegetables even after I had enough!" Joonmyun slides into his seat across from Minho's with an embarrassed smile cupped in his hands.
"It must have been fate then, because all of this good news has made me starving." Minho hooks an ankle around Joonmyun's under the table, accidentally knocking off one of his slippers as he spoons rice onto his husband's plate in a neat mound. "Oh! And here are the information booklets! I already set an appointment with the agent for Saturday, but we're supposed to call back before then and let them know which locations we want to tour."
"Ok!" Joonmyun holds up a rainbow of highlighters in one fist as he hands Minho a pair of chopsticks with the other. "I'm all ready to start annotating! Maybe we should have left the lights on after all," he adds with a chuckle.
"Over dessert, then," Minho says around his first mouthful of herb simmered vegetables and shredded chicken. "We'll turn the lights back on and make a proper pros and cons list for each location. But let's enjoy the ambiance for now?"
"Ok, ok," Joonmyun nods and rubs the side of Minho's ankle with his toes. His eyes glow like black sparks in the flicker of candlelight. Minho's next bite of soup slides off his spoon before it reaches his mouth because he gets so distracted by the curve of Joonmyun's happy smile.
"Ah, I'm so excited!" Joonmyun's voice is high in his throat, sliding up and down octaves as he giggles into his fist again. "I literally can't wait!"
