The 2007 Australian Federal Election - Results

Nov 24, 2007 21:16

Australia, you just did something amazing for me, you just made me have hope in our country. Thank you.

Kevin Rudd of the Labor party has won the election by a landslide; he's the 26th Prime Minister of Australia. For people who don't realise what a big deal this is, a short explanation - the Liberal party headed by John Howard has been in power for 12 years, with a n election every 4 years. Labor has consistently lost every single election, and today, for the first time people who have never voted for Labor did. Australians, traditionally, do not vote out government, this is just mind boggling.

One of the reporters on the ABC made a comment that sums up why the results of this election mean so much to me. Paraphrasing here - Australia wants more than an economy, they want a society. Yes, we want a society.
