Chapter 8 of Vengeance and Valor is up at
fever_dreams.
Virginia's arc ends with her discovering her real name, and with pirate shagging! She really, really can't call herself Virginia any more.
This marks the end of the first part of the book, the two origin arcs for the main characters. I am really, really happy with how this has gone so far, and feel confident and happy about the rest of the project.
Announcement:
I am taking a break for a while! I will try to make sure you have something to read in the interim so that you don't get too bored! I have no idea what form that will take -- possibly just a random sex scene between two characters you've never met -- but . . . hey, that's the fun.
There are two reasons for the brief hiatus:
1) Wow! Eight weeks of weekly posting! I am tired and need a break of a couple weeks to get a lead on myself again.
2) I am looking into publication for this thing!
As much as I thrive on your immediate feedback -- I really do; it has really kept me going -- and as much as I wanted to be able to do this entire thing for donations only, my financial situation has changed to the point that I need to take the short-term hit and start taking a longer view. After having looked at how romance/erotica e-publishing works -- it is way more sane and reasonable than print publication, and much kinder to the writer. Donations have trailed off -- not a rebuke, just an observation! I think this stands a good chance of helping me get where I need to be: bringing in regular income.
The major question here is whether the open posting on these first eight chapters counts as "previously published" for purposes of submitting this work to a publisher. This is not a question you or I can answer, so I have made enquiries. Nobody's gotten back to me yet. I am waiting to hear before I make a final decision about how to proceed. If it doesn't count, I'll be finishing V&V up privately and submitting it. These chapters might have to come down at that point, I don't know.
If that works out -- and if I can just get them to let me submit it, I think it will -- you will be able to buy a complete e-book for less than the average donation has been. Out of that, I will get somewhere around 40% of the sale price. This is a really good deal for the readers and, with a professional publishing machine behind it, a really good deal for me. That security would make me more likely to actually write the two sequels for this book, the three prequels, the background novels for Savage and Sin and Fury, and so on and so forth, not to mention the kajillion other ideas I have unrelated to my steampunk Victoriana setting.
If it doesn't work out, nothing changes. I go back to posting, and once it's done I can maybe devote some time to a website, publicity, art, stuff like that.
For those who have already donated, I will make sure that if this sees publication, you get a copy of the book if you want one. I've kept everyone's email address written down. Please know that you have my utmost gratitude. Thank you.
This has not been an easy decision to make, even though nothing is decided. I hope you all understand where I'm coming from.
Hey, from your side, either way this goes, the rest of the book will get written, and it will be available! It's not going away forever, I promise!
Thank you, everyone who has been reading, everyone who has been donating, and everyone who has been commenting. That last, especially, means the world to me.
More discussion later. Right now: things to do!
