Okay, guys. I don't think there's reason to panic, but here's the deal.
SUP dumps some US LiveJournal staff. Nobody has any idea what this means for the future of this site.
There are a number of things you can do if you're worried about LJ folding and you losing all your entries.
A much more comprehensive list can be found
here, via
the_xtina, including non-Windows-based backups.
There is
LJBook, which turns your LJ into a PDF document. Its servers are getting slammed right now so I suggest hitting it during non-peak hours. I also suggest donating to them if you use their service. It works on all security levels. You do have to submit your password. Be aware of that.
There is
LJArchive, a downloadable program for Windows that allows you to download a backup of your journal and comments. Supposedly. Doesn't work on private entries.
There is
LJBackup, which does the same.
If you are the moderator of a community both LJArchive and LJBook will apparently allow you to back up that community. This is not a bad idea.
There are other communities based on LiveJournal's source code: GreatestJournal, DeadJournal, InsaneJournal, JournalFen, and probably others I am not aware of. Some of these still require invite codes, as LiveJournal did once upon a time, and some are rather difficult to join, seeing as their servers appear to be down almost perpetually. Getting on one or more of these other communities is still not a bad idea.
There is a site called Dreamwidth in development, and it sounds promising, but it isn't there yet. I mention it in passing because I like what I have heard.
If something happens, I am on InsaneJournal and DeadJournal under this username. I will join the others as soon as it is possible to do so, to reserve the name if nothing else. I will not crosspost entries, but will probably switch my regular posting to InsaneJournal. Also remember I have a site at www.morningstarhall.com; I seldom update there, but if things become critically fucked-up over here, I will.
I am contemplating putting together an actual Blogger-type blog so that RSS feeds can be syndicated, but I am very much in love with the nested comments of the open-source LJ software.
Obviously, since we don't know what's going to happen, nothing is set in stone.
If nothing happens, I will simply stay here, no changes, and it will be business as usual.
If anyone has any further sites that may be of use, please speak up. I'll add to the list. We have a great community here, and I don't want people to lose touch with one another because a bunch of assholes decided that we aren't profitable enough.
