Oh, I'd say that black people had something to do with it- but only to the extent that overall a large portion of the black community is religious, and there's a strong tie between various Western religions and anti-gay sentiments. Let's assume that nobody that marks the 'black' box on the census form voted for it. Would that change the result? Very likely. But it's like arguing that in a race that ended up decided by one vote: exactly which vote was it that made the difference? Any one of the votes for the winning side, switched, would have altered the result. It didn't all come down to Bob at the 7-11.
I've read things prior to the vote with blacks, Hispanics, asians, and a broad variety of denominations of Christianity all as potential spoiler groups that would determine how this turned out. But ultimately the more you talk to people the more it seems that the big swing group was the uninformed or misinformed- the people who voted for the amendment without knowing all the facts about it. That seems to be the big problem everywhere, with every candidate. The counselor at my alma mater told me Obama was a radical. One of my mother's students said he'd enslave all the white people.
As I've said before (and plagarized others in doing so), the best part about democracy is that everyone gets a vote. The worst part about democracy is that everyone gets a vote. As much as we might like to think otherwise, we're a nation of fucktards.
And I'm still waiting for someone to pass the blame on Florida's 64% who banned things here. What subgroup did that, hmm?
That's true too, and by the way you explained it (which I appreciate) I would agree. You can point a finger at one group, but when you do that you've got to point a finger at all the other groups involved too. Because everyone made a point, everybody's vote made the difference.
But now I totally understand what you're saying. More people stood up this time around and they had something to do with it, but there's no way that anyone can shoulder the 'blame'. It's like my mom's boyfriend getting pissed at her for voting for Obama, and how my mom was going around saying that "she was the one who single handedly elected Obama." No one did it just by themselves.
Very true.
Eh, I agree. Here in Michigan we got it banned last election (when I couldn't vote yet) and all I can say is that my county had nothing to do with it.
Mine voted the exact same percentages as Florida as a whole. We also hold the record for most golf courses per capita, and it has a ridiculously large number of churches and banks. You can't drive a mile anywhere in the urban areas without seeing a church or bank.

Exactly, thank you.

Apparently the roman-catholic cuban vote.
*eyeroll*
Because pointing fingers will do any good. People seem to forget that when you point your finger at someone, there's 3 pointing right back at yourself.
yes. "religious zealotry" is to blame. But that's not limited to race; and blaming it on the black turnout for the presidential election is ludicrous, not to mention that trading hate for hate will not do ANYONE any damned good.
