First,
nighthellcat posts about Melvin Grady. No, it's not likely you've heard his name, which is sort of the sad part. Melvin was
beaten to death for his tax refund, and, adding insult to injury, his family cannot really afford to bury him.
This kind of thing just . . . really bothers me. If you can spare even a little, Hellcat is taking donations
here. It won't take much to make a difference.
Second, I am sure many of you read
Joss Whedon's excellent piece about the tragic "honor killing" of Dua Khalil. She was seventeen, a Yazidi, and stoned to death for associating with a Sunni muslim. Her murder was recorded by people with camera phones, modern technology recording a stone-age crime. Those people didn't intervene. They just stood there and watched her die.
It's been just over a year. Author and artist
Skyla Dawn Cameron doesn't want the memory of this horror to fade, and so she created
Nothing But Red, an arts anthology.
The purpose of Nothing But Red is to bring attention to the issue of violence against women worldwide, as well as the continuing need for equality, through art - both written and visual - and by raising money for a charity that strives to help women of all faiths, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds, with the support of dedicated volunteers who share a desire to promote equality.
All proceeds go to
Equality Now, a worldwide organization dedicated to ending violence and discrimination against women.

The book is available
here in both print and downloadable formats.
I think it's a wonderful idea for a wonderful cause, and I'm only sorry I didn't hear about it in time to contribute something.
