The Metro

Sargon snapped some pictures of the Metro on Saturday. I took the last two.

The sign we have all come to love. The Metro Diner on 11th street.

The front. It looks like it was from the '50s, but it was actually built in '84, I think. It quickly became a favorite hangout and a city landmark.

Place has the coolest door pulls.

Time to eat! The counter area.

The counter area again.

Cash counter/register stand. How cool is that? Seriously.

Above the counter, neon and tin signs. "Hands off my waitress until shift change!"

The walk to the left-hand dining area, and the antique televisions that I've always coveted. They are so very This Island Earth.

The left-hand dining area. It's often this busy. The Metro will be missed by many.

Lunchtime. Note the .45s on the wall.

A booth with typical I Love Lucy decor.

The right-hand dining area with the coveted corner booth. Check out those neat-o lights!

Those pompoms are always hanging there. A now-ironic symbol of TU's patronage? I don't know.

"When you play baseball, wear a good supporter." I'm ticked this photo is blurry.

How I remember it best.

From what I understand, the university paid off the owner of the land the Metro sits on so they could raze the diner, but did not pay the owners of the diner itself. They were promised money to cover moving expenses so that they could shift locations, but the money wasn't remotely enough to cover costs.

One last night of lights.
