My dad always used to donate blood through the Red Cross when I was little, and I always thought it was really awesome of him. Once he explained to me that the blood that saved my mother's life during all her surgeries came from volunteer donors, I decided I was going to donate as soon as I was old enough. For years, I couldn't do it, because I was too anemic. I promised that once that was no longer an issue I would start going, because my dad can't anymore. His health and medical history keep him from it.
I mean, I have basically the perfect blood history. My history is squeaky clean. I should be donating. So I gave my first bag of whole blood today, and while I was there I met an 80-year-old donor who has given almost fifty gallons of blood over his sixty-year donation career.
Sometimes, people are just amazing.
