Spring is in the air. It is pretty amazing the affect of spring. Near end of winter, I noticed I had pretty much lost all desire to do anything. I would want to go straight home from work and didn't feel like doing anything. Then, the weather got warm for a day or two a few weeks ago. The change was instant. I immediately started going through piles of stuff that had built up during the winter and making progress on projects that I had let sit. Winter came back just to show whose boss for two weeks and now it is warm again and should be until fall.
Supposedly winter causes cabin fever and although I’ve heard it makes you antsy to get outdoors, for me it apparently just saps all my will to do anything. I'm glad it is over.
Since the last update, I’ve finally accepted the position of SAP Basis Administrator. For those of you that don't know what SAP is, it is basically a very large German-based company that develops enterprise applications. These types of applications run businesses. For someone who built a career in computer hardware with a focus on the client-side, this has been a pretty massive shift. My brain just doesn't naturally work strictly in the world of software, so it has taken me a while to adjust. The learning curve has been pretty large but I’m getting there. The amazing thing about this is the chance to get into a side of IT that I have never been exposed to. The most frustrating thing is going from a very high level of competency to darn near nil. Pretty much none of my working knowledge can translate into this new role and I’ve been reaching back to CS courses for answers. I've been working in this department for over 5 months now and I’m still barely scratching the surface. The good news is this can only help me professionally and personally. It is humbling to be so green again.
Other news is the almost purchase of a newer car. My current car needed about $1.4K in repairs before it could be inspected. I took a week to go car shopping just to see what was out there. Came pretty close to getting a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. Very nice car, but I’ve been eyeing a cross-over of some time. Something around the area of the new Ford Edge. So, I finally decided to get my car repaired and inspected and see what happens in a year or two.
Other than this, I think things have been pretty quiet. Very doubtful there will be any international trips for me thanks to my new job. Some would like this but it is actually a downer for me. The chance to travel to other countries, even if I’m working 16 hour days, was still pretty cool. The most I can hope for now is a laptop and a UNIX shell.
This coming weekend, a friend and I will travel up to NY City for the first time for both of us. Not sure what all we will do, but I doubt it will be hard to come up with something. The following weekend I’ll be driving down to Florida with my parents for a cousin's reunion. Will be good to have some time with the parents as well as to visit a part of the family I haven't seen a quite a while.
Happy Birthday to Jen and Brad. Sorry I missed your party.
Later,
Aaron
