Between earthquakes, hurricanes and fires, I'm still here. Granted, none of these have affected this little corner of the planet, for which I thank Ceiling Cat. For those who HAVE been affected, my heartfelt prayers.
Still looking for work. Still sending out résumé after résumé, with little or no response to show for it. I did get one fairly rapid answer to one recently; it was a “thank you for your interest, we are pursuing other candidates” answer, but it was still an answer. So I can mark that one as “completed” on the list. There are still quite a few “pending” items, though...sadly, no less than four of them are with a single, fairly-well-known temp agency. I’d like to at least hear something. Other than the automated “thank you for your application, we’re forwarding it to the hiring manager” email, at least. I’m likely to mark at least two of them as “expired” tomorrow; I think three months is plenty of time for a private-sector employer to make a decision and notify people.
I might have some contract work waiting in the wings, but that will depend on a series of emails that started earlier today. It’s one of those “a friend of a friend needs some work done, and heard you might be able to do it” things. Before I can commit, though, I have to find out exactly what it is they’re wanting, so I can tell for sure whether I’m qualified to do the work. I’m a competent computer tech who knows the rudiments of building out a SOHO LAN, but I’m not a sysadmin or DBA, and if the latter two are what this person is looking for, I’m going to have to gracefully bow out, no matter how painful it might be. I could easily get $75 an hour, or higher, for the work. I’m told someone else quoted them $150 an hour. But as Red Adair is said to have quipped when asked why he charged so much for his services, “if you think I’m expensive, see how much an amateur costs you.”
It’s time to go relax on the couch with my hunny and do my impression of a couch potato. Catch y’all later.
*poof*
