Dear Texas
Our hearts are with you. We know how you feel…. What you must be feeling and the loss that you are just now realizing, and have yet to realize. We are grateful that the lessons learned during Katrina were not in vain, that they may have saved thousands of lives and prompted quick response and less human suffering. We are relieved that the death toll is thousands less than Katrina in spite of the size and fury of Ike. We know what it is like to lose all of our personal possessions, to lose friends and family, pets and memories… and our homes. We know what you face and our prayers and thoughts are with you. It is my hope that no one ever questions your choice of location for your home, or somehow suggests that you deserve destruction of your lives because of your choice. We know how that feels too. It is our hope that no one goes on the air and publically announces that Texans have worn out their welcome in their town/state/community because of a few bad apples. We know how that feels too. We appreciate that someone learned not to air photos and video of the looting that we understand took place - and made it, not the good people suffering, the center point of your tragedy. We hope that your family finds a soft landing in a town that will welcome you until you are able to go home, heal and rebuild. We hope you find kindness and care, not judgment and contempt.
In the months and years ahead, you will need strength, endurance, and mostly patience with the rest of the country and those who have never encountered such a thing and have no idea exactly what it takes to pull through such a life altering ordeal. Our thoughts will be with you often.
Love,
Louisiana
