A 13-year-old boy shot himself in the head outside the gym in John Curtis High School last week for reasons unknown. I can not imagine the grief his family must be feeling. I have said it here many times before - this city has a suicide epidemic. As a Mom of a son who is close in age, this disturbed me more than I can express. It took me days to even address it here. He had mentioned to friends his plans to kill himself and told the exact day, time and location. No one took him seriously. I can not imagine what must have been repeating in this child's head and heart when no one took any actions to prevent this, no one reached out to his desperation and pain.
I hope at the very least this opens a dialog between kids and parents.
