Watching Over me

Watching Over Me

It was the smell of fresh grown grass in my youth
The sound of a rippling creek
The sight of a slowly aging barn
And the loss of the woman I called home

These scenes cut from my dreams always lead me on it seems
I've had years and decades and weeks again
To count the friends that came and went
But you, you were always by my side, no  you never left my side.

I stood holding a glass firm in my hand
Wondering about that girl though I never knew what it meant
There were names and faces and conversations I can still recall
But the signs of you I don't recall

From the day I was born until the day I leave the earth
From the day I die back to before the day before my Birth
You were there watching over me
Even if Your hands I did not see, it was your Love watching over me

It's the hum of the machines and the voices of my past
The things I build in this world they never seem to last
I work my fingers to the bone for the sons who call me home
And you, you are always by my side, no you never left my side

I love my sons, I love my wife, and for them I'd give up my life
I wonder if you care for my family the way you cared for me
I count the days as they came and go
But the signs of you, your love is the one thing I know

From the day I was born utnil the day I leave this earth
From the day I die back long before our birth
you were watching over me
Even if Your hands we do not see, it's always your Love watching over me
