Simspiration: First Day of College

Jun 04, 2010 15:35

This was a bit spur-of-the-moment as I should be revising and things, so it's not that good, but it fits.
This won't mean much to anyone not reading my legacy and contains major spoilers for anyone who does, but I want to be actually able to write something in response to Simspiration for once, so whatever. If you do read my legacy, you may want to wait until after my next legacy update before reading this because it will tell you nearly everything.

Karen Jayapalan hesitantly slid open the door of the taxi and climbed out to see her new home for four years.

She'd been thinking about this day since she was a kid and the situation had always been getting worse. As a child she'd pictured Laura there with her, both of them going to the same university and possibly even doing the same course, but then her aunt had brought in the new university laws and Laura hadn't gotten in. Nor had her distant cousins close to her age - she was destined to spend most of it alone. But that had been the point of becoming an adult, hadn't it? She was going to learn to cope all on her own.

But still... even a few months ago she'd been picturing the scene better than this, her Dad driving the whole family and everyone helping her shift her stuff into her room, the kind of happy family she'd always assumed she had. Except she hadn't. Her mother wasn't her mother, her little brother was only a little half-brother and, though her father was indeed her father, he was also apparently insane and homicidal. And she only existed through his murdering a distant relative because it would make her pretty and popular.

Now, instead of having a happy family helping her settle, her Dad was in jail, her 'Mum' was making up for his actions by constantly fighting crime as Captain Hero, her aunt was busy trying to cover up the political scandal of it all and Laura and Winston had schoolwork and couldn't travel so far. Laura was the only person in the whole world who would understand what she was going through and for the next four years she was nearly always going to be practically a whole day's journey away.

Karen and Laura could try and do anything they could to make up for their father's insane actions, but how was she supposed to fit in with normal people? She could see other, normal, college students wandering around  - they would never understand what she'd been through. How could she have friends here? A boyfriend? Relationships depended on communication and she couldn't exactly walk in and say "Oh hi, I'm Karen, I'm 18 and I come from Simfield. Oh, and by the way, my father's a crazy, evil mass murderer and the grim reaper's my other parent! But I swear I'm not like that...!" Maybe she would be like that... she had a lot in common with her father and he was apparently fairly normal before he went to college.

"Hey, are you going to get your stuff out of my taxi or not?!"
Karen was brought back to Earth by the grumpy taxi driver. Maybe he'd be her first victim when she turned evil too... Later maybe - in the meantime she struggled to pull her heavy cases out of the back of the taxi, which drove off quickly as soon as she paid, no offer of help to get her cases inside. She could almost imagine Laura being there to carry one, making jokes to cheer her up. Her throat felt increasingly tight as her eyes welled up a little.

Suddenly she felt her pocket vibrating as her phone went off and she quickly fished it out to find a text:
'Ugh, u wudn't believe how much hwk Ms Figwit gave us 2day, ur lucky u escaped while u cud! Janice says u better scope out some hot guys and grls 4 her 4 when we come visit u soon, have u seen any hot college guys yet? Tessa agrees + thinks u should tell them ur a twin so they'll b all over u + naturally Rox just wants 2 know if the cafeterias serve grilled cheese *eye roll* They're all telling me 2 say how much they miss u, but u know I miss u most - u were the best cook left in the house! ;) Keep ur head up sis and I'll there visiting u b4 u know it! Love u, Laur xxx'

Karen smiled: some things never changed. She still had her twin and good friends, it was a warm, sunny day and her new dorm looked pretty good. And somehow, as she walked inside, her baggage felt a lot lighter.
