I usually dont mind being oncall. Today I do. Getting a page at 0520 on a Saturday, after being up all night at a football game and not getting to bed until about 0100, sucks.
no, I'm an emergency department registered nurse. For the time being I am doing ER Case Management thanks to my having tore up my knee one year ago (Oct 25th 2006 to be exact). As a manager I rotate being on call to help with patients who need extra assistance. This mornings phone call was for a patient who wanted to go onto hospice services (he had a terminal condition) and not be admitted to the hospital. I got roused out of bed to help a dying man be able to be home with his family for his last days instead of spending them in a hospital surrounded by noisey equipment, strangers and chaos. No matter how nice the hospital I work at is I wouldnt want to spend my last days there if I had a choice. I took the call, set up hospice for the patient, and crawled back in my warm bed; listened to my husband snore, knew my kids were safe and in their rooms sleeping and said a small "thank you" that I was able to help my patient in one small way
