News of the day, late edition

Coincidentally, a bunch of food-related stories, while I eat dinner at work (don't feel sorry for me -- as usual, it's all my fault for slacking last week).

The NYT profiles a record-breaking ultramarathoner who also happens to be vegan.

The latest fashionable corporate perk is a company vegetable garden.

One for amber_phoenix: The NYT talks to the White House pastry chef, Bob Yosses. "Over two days of interviews, his cheerfulness flagged only once: at the thought of Christmas, and the many open-house receptions it entails. 'Twenty-thousand cookies is a lot,' he said."

A new high-end restaurant in New York City has stipulated a mandatory 19% "gratuity" for all diners, which is not just damn cheeky but may be illegal under city laws.

One for ricevermicelli: A NYT writer suggests a number of movie & drink pairings. He misses one obvious one: Casablanca with a champagne cocktail. Of course, for that to be a truly accurate pairing, what you should really do is roam around the house all through the film, pouring yourself a variety of drinks, then leaving them where they sit, undrunk.
