Barakat, a Cambridge-based organization working on literacy in Central & South Asia, is looking for a
part-time intern & volunteer coordinator:
Purpose of the job: The Intern and Volunteer Coordinator is the heart of the intern program at Barakat. This position ensures Barakat's intern program is successful both to Barakat and to the interns that work with Barakat. Also, they ensure that Barakat is well known in the collegiate and community setting.
Principal Responsibilities
• Recruit, orient, and train new interns and volunteers (includes advertising the position and interviewing the candidates)
• Delegate tasks, projects, and responsibilities to the interns (after first familiarizing him/herself with the organizational set-up and the immediate and long-term needs at Barakat)
• Represent Barakat and make connections at career fairs, nonprofit symposia, and any events in the Boston area that deal with South and Central Asia, literacy, or human rights
• Manage Outreach Director's schedule and assist him/her in connecting with local companies and organizations sponsoring events focusing on South and Central Asia
• Supervise Campus Chapter Coordinator and help to coordinate chapter activities
• Participate in a weekly directors meeting to discuss operational and management issues, set priorities for the coming week, and communicate ideas for the execution of Barakat's business plan
• Organize a volunteer and intern appreciation party three times a year
• Evaluate interns and volunteers and have them evaluate Barakat at the end of their commitment
Commitment
• Available starting June 15, 2010
• Will give preference to people who can work beyond the summer
• Must come into the office at fixed hours 4-5 days a week
• Minimum of 20 hours per week (30 hours per week during the summer)
• $350/month maximum (more compensation for work study students)
Requirements
Required Skills/Experience/Qualities
• Available in the Boston area (no relocation expenses paid)
• Prior experience in a leadership or supervisory position
• Ability to help interns formulate work-plans and guide their progress
• Proficiency with MS Office, including Word, Powerpoint and Excel
• Professional attitude and ability to represent Barakat over the phone or through email
• Knowledge of education and health issues in South and Central Asia.
• Good organizational skills.
• Ability to delegate responsibilities and ensure their follow up to completion
• Ability to research advertising opportunities to attract suitable interns
• Ability to maintain good and effective communication with all members of the Barakat team
• Ability to work as a team player as well as independently
• Ability to enforce deadlines for submission of allotted tasks

• Familiarity with the cultures of South/Central Asia
• Commitment to the creation of a just, strong and literate society in South Asia.
• Preference given to Boston Co-op students
