News of the day

The Toronto Humane Society has been raided by OSPCA and police; Tim Trow was arrested, and many other top staff have been charged. They've also charged everyone on the board of directors, which took them by surprise.

Man with cerebral palsy makes huge changes in his movement by working with a choreographer on a dance piece. "I said today, 'I can feel my Achilles,'" Mr. Mozgala said. "You have to realize, I have never felt my Achilles before." There's also a clip of the piece (which is beautiful).

Now that's gonads: Couple crashes White House state dinner (and then posts about it on Facebook, natch).

Interesting BBC Magazine article on the visualization of information. Includes a fascinating (and depressing) graphic called The Billion-Dollar-O-Gram.

Conservative Republican leaders are proposing that the RNC institute a "purity test" to determine which candidates receive funding in 2010 election cycle. I love how the resolution starts off:

WHEREAS, President Ronald Reagan believed that the Republican Party should support and espouse conservative principles and public policies; and

WHEREAS, President Ronald Reagan also believed the Republican Party should welcome those with diverse views; and

WHEREAS, President Ronald Reagan believed, as a result, that someone who agreed with him 8 out of 10 times was his friend, not his opponent;

Because clearly, "welcoming diversity" means being friends with people who disagree with up to 20% of your principles. The Republican Party: it funds candidates who like country and western. Also amusing to me is that both Bushes have apparently been relegated to the same historical dustbin as New Coke.

Related to the above: The proposal has come under heavy fire from both sides. Some have noted that the much-cited President Reagan actually would have failed this test.

US university makes fitness course a prerequisite for graduation for students with a BMI over 30. The article is unclear (and I haven't been able to find one that's clearer, even after hunting up the university paper's take on it) about whether you just have to attend this course to pass it, or whether you have to get your BMI below 30. (And a reality check on what a BMI of 30 means: my BMI is 29.8.)

CIA's manual of magic, written in 1953 by magician John Mulholland, is now declassified and on sale.

South Korea has made its first conviction for racial discrimination.

Dubai is broke. Frankly, it couldn't happen to a nicer place, in my opinion. Also, I'm pissed off that none of the coverage I've seen has mentioned what effect this has had on its slave labour force. Not even a whisper in the BBC articles I read that they even exist. Oh no, wait! There are two brief paragraphs and a photo at the bottom of this article. They get equal weight with the Westerners who have been living like royalty on their backs.
