Physical punishment may lower a child's IQ. The difference is fairly minor, but the effect is worse the younger the child is. When I initially saw this headline I thought of at least three major variables that could be confounding that result, but they did control for two of those (the third one I thought of was parental IQ).
A story from the NYT on the smuggling of Europe's waste to poorer countries in Africa and Asia. I read a book (or short story?) once where someone had invented time travel -- but in every simulation he ran, humans eventually dumped so much of today's trash in the past that they wiped out their own development. So he made sure no one ever knew of his find...
