The Greatest Secret in History...

Jun 01, 2006 09:33

...is that the Da Vinci Code is a terrible, terrible book.

I've heard a good number of people talk about how great it is when they have never read the book themselves. Then they're surprised when the movie sucks.

Honestly, if it wasn't for the controversial nugget of Christian idealism found inside, the actually interesting and well-researched (by other people in other published works) foundation for the story, you'd find the book where it belongs: sandwiched in between the Hardy Boys and about 60 R.L. Stine "books", its glossy cover emblazoned with exaggerated caricatures that perfectly match the one-dimensional characterization found inside.

"'The Da Vinci Code has always been a popular darling, not a critical darling,' says Valerie Van Galder, president of domestic marketing for Sony. 'We make movies for people, not critics.'

It showed in the reviews. The movie - which was screened for film reviewers only three days before its release - garnered a thumbs up from only 22% of the nation's critics, according to the survey site rottentomatoes.com."
