Recomendation

My father told me about this short story by Donna Barr (author of The Desert Peach), so I found it.
Good Morning, Herr Hitler.
The basic premise is that in hell, you have to say "good morning" to every person you've every wronged. By name.

Good piece. Readable in a few minutes.

Yeah.

"Better?" "No. But thank you."

I love the way Oppenheimer seems to want that forgiveness not for himself but to heal the pain of regret, while Hitler just doesn't want to have to deal with it all. The battles of the old generals reminds me of the Elysian fields in the greek underworld.

Rommel tries so hard to help Oppenheimer...The battles reminded me of Valhalla. I wonder how many cultures have a fighting-heaven sort of potential afterlife?

I was particuarly struck by the little bit about children. She's managed to make this incredibly funny piece, while still keeping in the tragedy of the actual history.
