Baby Reeves

The day started out like any other--Rodney and I walking about four miles around the temple--but ended up totally different! When we arrived home, Janis was gripping the counter saying "I think I need to get to the hospital!" Wow, two weeks early, Brad has left for work, some of the children still asleep--we hastily make plans and I drive off with Janis in our Honda Pilot to go to LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City during rush hour. The only trouble is I began hearing something strange with the car, and by the time we reached the Bountiful 26th South exit, I realize I have a flat tire! We carefully ease our way to the inside barrier of the freeway and turn on our hazard lights. Cars and trucks are screaming actually making our vehicle rock back and forth. Impossible for Janis to get safely out of the car on the passenger side, even if I could get Rodney there fast enough to trade vehicles. We have to try. I called Rodney and got him on the way, then called 911 for assistance. It was way more than we bargained for--firetruck, ambulance, paramedics, policemen--quite a rubber-necking experience for early morning commuters as they held Janis from our car to hers. They direct traffic aside, allowing us to re-enter the inside lane of traffic and on to the hospital, leaving Rodney with a lame Pilot to fix. The officers are nice, Rodney says, giving him protection while he changes the tire. They guess Janis's age at 26.

Contractions are coming hard and fast, but we arrive in time to get to a room and for Brad to arrive, but alas, not in time for the doctor. The nurse prepares to deliver but at the last minute, another doctor comes in for the catch. Janis did a beautiful job without the benefit of any anesthetic and baby came forth with a mighty set of lungs. Baby Reeves weighs 7 lbs. 1 oz, 19 1/2 inches and is perfect in every way.

What an incredible blessing for me to witness the coming forth of this precious life! I explained to Janis that in the Spanish language, giving birth is expressed as "giving light". It's a beautiful way to think of the partnership we women share with God in providing His children with bodies that will enable them to gain light and understanding of their purpose here.
