an actual conversation started by one of my co-workers

I have to set this up. This is probably one of the most pointless conversations that I have ever been unfortunate enough to have to engage in.

One of the things that cashiers and baggers at my store do as an extra bit of customer service is put a rubber band around containers that might open. Berries, eggs, Take-out stuff from prepared foods, etc.

I had thought that I had a good rapport with this employee, apparently not. Months ago, I had mentioned my frustration with some of the closing baggers who are more concerned with cleaning up and getting out ahead of schedule than helping customers. She is not the problem, and I made that clear. She actually works very hard.

A couple of nights ago, she asked me if things were better, if I was happy with the closing baggers (including her) that night, I said yes, definitely.

Okay, that was long winded, but necessary.

Last night, as I am waiting for my husband to meet me to get the heck out of there, aforementioned employee approaches me. "Can I ask you about Something?" says she. "Sure" Says I"

Here is where it gets ludicrous.

She says "Why do you take a rubber band from the container and then put it on the thing?"

????????? I thought. I said, "I don't understand"

Her diatribe "Sometimes, when I bag for you, you take a rubber band out, and then set it on top of the thing instead of just going ahead and putting it on. I mean, either put it on, or I will just do it. I just don't see the point of that. I mean, why just set it on top? I'll just do it. Now if I don't have any rubber bands at my end, then I can see it."

My head is about to explode at this point, but I calmly say, "Well I guess I was just trying to be helpful. If you are standing at the end of the register waiting for things to come down one by one, I figure it's easier for you to have it there."

I am thinking, Why? What does it matter? Who cares? Who gives a flying F*&k?

There is still no escape.

"I have no idea if anyone else has noticed, or has an issue with this, or has said anything to you about it, I just think you should either go ahead and do it, or just let me do it myself".

"Sure, nooo problem." Says I.

Damn. Am I insane, or is that the most petty thing you have ever heard?

And something tells me, she has given this a lot of thought.
