Nope.
Since EVERYONE I KNEW at 13 was reading shit like "Flowers in the Attic" and "Teen Harlequins", does anyone in my generation *really* have a leg to stand on?
Probably not, because even if YOU didn't read the dreck, someone you knew did.
And yeah, some of them are a little extremely fannish, but having been to numerous fan events? It's hardly limited to tweenies and teenies. 40-year old women shriek less, but are just as barmy when the objects of the fannish affection appear.
The reality is, kids are reading. And that's good start.
Being contemptuous just seems, sort of mean. Let 'em love what they love, and then, when they're through the series, introduce them to other stuff. That's what I did with my friend's mid-teens daughter. Right now she's reading Nancy Baker, who writes quite nicely.
