Apparently, as of LJ's next code push, not only gender will be a mandatory field at account creation, but they're also dropping it down to a binary male/female option. That's right, not only will you be forced to specify a gender, but you'll be also pigeonholed into either/or. This lovely bit of needless discrimination against the transgender & genderqueer community (likely) brought to you by the (alleged) need to have more specifically targeted ads.
