Character name: Ariane Emory
Fandom: Ari is from the novel Cyteen, which is part of C.J. Cherryh's Alliance-Union setting.
Timeline: Chapter 3, section iii, right before she's murdered in canon.
Age: 122.
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Ariane is a master manipulator, and with the proper drugs, time, and equipment, she can alter memories, make modifications to a person's personality, and more. In her canon, Ariane plots the course of entire populations through genetic modification, and has perfected many inventions, including a rejuvenation drug, artificial wombs, and human clones. She can also skillfully guide conversations where she wants them to go with little to no effort, and begins to analyze people upon meeting them, finding out how best to work their abilities to her advantage and manipulate them into a position where they'd be willing to do so. Her skills lie mainly in the medical and psychological fields, but anything scientific is likely to catch her eye. While she can throw a few punches, Ari can't really hold her own in a fight, and prefers to let others do that for her. At Reseune, she has a pair of bodyguards who are with her at all times, but they have not accompanied her to the Thor.
How would they use their abilities?: Mainly for her own benefit, though if she's allowed a lab, she'll be happy to work towards her own intangible goals for the betterment of an anonymous "mankind". Though she may not form emotional connections with others well, she does see things in the long view, and actively works toward the betterment of Science. Ariane will function perfectly well within the rules until she's memorized them (about half an hour later or so), and then will begin to seek means to circumnavigate them or bend them to suit herself better.
Appearance: Ariane Emory is a woman of above-average height and slight build. She's taken very good care of herself over the years, and between that and rejuv, the anti-aging drug that she both helped to perfect and takes regularly, looks to be in her mid-late 40s. Her features have a certain hard beauty about them, and her curly black hair has a distinct stripe of gray in it. She presents herself with an air of command wherever she goes, and even in social situations that make her uncomfortable, she maintains her poise. Her shoulders may be a little stooped, and her pace a bit slower than it once was, but Ari is still fully capable and very much in charge. A master of politics and intrigue, Ari’s body language and facial expressions rarely show anything that is not deliberately put there, either to make a point or to deceive.
Background: Ariane Emory is the director of Reseune, a research facility on a planet called Cyteen. Her mother, Olga, was one of the scientists that helped found the facility, and also began much of the political maneuvering that defines Cyteen's role in the government of the collection of space stations and one planet that constitutes what is known as Union. Union is located many light-years from Earth, and after a long war for independence from confederation known as the Alliance (consisting of Earth and several space stations nearest it), operates more or less as its own country. Alliance and Union are currently engaged in a cold war in Ari's time, and have been for decades. Most of her life has been war, and apart from childhood, she's known little else.
Her mother Olga's only child, Ariane was born relatively late in her mother's life. Her father, one of Olga's fellow researchers, died when Ari was still a baby. He was never romantically involved with Olga, and they chose to have a child together purely because they were two of the brightest of their generation, and wanted a child that would carry on that legacy of intelligence. Ari showed signs of brilliance at an early age, and Olga began her training in science and mathematics shortly thereafter. Olga was a harsh and demanding woman, and brought young Ariane up with even the smallest things being presented as a test. The child was pushed to her limits more than once, but learned to persevere and to enjoy the challenges that her mother presented her with, and proved to be a promising candidate for succession in running Reseune. Though her mother was harsh, she was also extremely protective of her only child, and as a result, young Ariane had few friends, or indeed even opportunities to have contact with others her own age. On the rare occasions when she did, other children tended to be unnerved by her smarts, and she would bully them until she got her way. Olga Emory died when Ariane was nine, and after a few hard years spent with an uncle who neither understood nor liked her, Ari declared her own independence at the age of fourteen, moving to her own quarters with her own staff. She had enough political clout to do so, and has remained a woman alone ever since, with the exception of her personal bodyguards, Catlin and Florian.
Politics had always been tense between Union and the Alliance, but when Ari was 17, war broke out between the two confederations. Ariane, firmly on the side of independence for Union from an Earth government that didn't understand them or govern them well, redirected all of Reseune's activities toward producing azi soldiers. Azi are human clones who are exceptionally rational and logical, and are programmed to do a specific job, as well as to gain pleasure from doing that job well. Hostilities more or less ceased after heavy costs to both sides, but the cold war continues to this day. Union's government is called the Council of Nine, with one representative elected from each section of the population that helps a civilization to work--Science, Defense, Trade, State, Citizens, Information, Industry, Internal Affairs and Finance. Ariane has been the Councillor for Science for the past fifty years, and has many political enemies.
Union also contains within its structure the appellation of "Special"--essentially a government-certified genius. There are fourteen Specials within Union, and Ariane Emory is one of them. Specials are more or less above the law, and are considered State property. Their movements are fairly strictly controlled by the Council of Nine, but on the other hand, they can't be prosecuted for crimes.
Ari runs Reseune well, and her genius has helped it to develop to the point that it is at today. Feared and respected, but rarely liked, she entered into a professional relationship with one of her students who is also a Special, Jordan Warrick, that quickly turned sour as he tried to gain more influence over how the facilities were run, and criticized what he saw as the questionable ethics of some of her projects. Justin Warrick, Jordan's son and personal replicate, as well as a Special, was created out of Ari's desire to have someone similar to Jordan to work with, but without some of Jordan's more irritating points. Once the boy was old enough, she took him in turn as her student, rushed into things somewhat by the discovery of her own illness and the desire to begin on what would be her most ambitious work. To do that, however, she would need a mind like Justin's to handle the details, and Jordan stood in the way of Ari achieving her goal. Before she could truly use Justin for the purpose that she had created him, she needed to make certain that Jordan lost his sway over the boy.
When Justin came to her and asked for the favor of having his father and his azi/brother in all but blood, Grant, transferred out of Reseune, she took advantage of the opportunity to both gratify some of her personal desire and to work on redirecting Justin's development to more closely line up with what she wanted him to be. She pressured him into a sexual relationship with her, promising him Jordan and Grant's eventual freedom. In canon, Ariane dies shortly after Justin assists Grant in escaping from Reseune.
Her ultimate goal in all of her research is something that she calls "psychogenesis". Far more than just genetic replication of an individual, it also involves said replicate being raised as closely as possible to how the original person was raised, in an attempt to recreate the entire person, both mentally and emotionally as well as physically.
Personality: The best words to use when describing Ariane Emory are "amoral" and "pragmatic". Intelligent to the point where it's almost frightening, Ari sees little to no problem with manipulating people through bribery, blackmail, or in the direst cases, threats of physical violence. Everyone has a job to do that makes society work more smoothly, and so long as someone has a skill that's useful to her, she'll keep them around and working for her. She doesn't usually manipulate people for the fun of it, but she likes to get some value out of those around her, and is willing to provide things that benefit them in exchange for their help. Ariane can be charming and sociable with the right people, and often is, but in the end, she's hard and cold underneath the surface.
Her smarts and her keen insights into human behavior leave many people wondering if Ari is clairvoyant. Ari's relationships with other people are ambivalent at best, outright antagonistic at worst. She's always two or three steps ahead of everyone else, and plans future decisions based upon any possible outcomes that she can see. She can admire the talents of others in an abstract way, in the manner that a carpenter or a chef acknowledges the usefulness of the tools at their disposal. Other people, however, are not to be trusted, useful as they are, and even those that would call themselves her friends are never allowed very close. Ari is a loner by nature and by upbringing, and while she might wish for someone to share her vision with once in a while, in the end, she's in things for herself.
Professionally and casually, Ariane is a driven and dominant woman. She prefers not to waste time on the details of a project, leaving the smaller things for others to work on while she plans out the bigger things. Cold, ruthless, and calculating, Ari has little patience for inferior work and inefficiency. If a job isn't being done according to her exacting standards, she'll find someone to do it better and faster. She remains largely detached from the rest of humanity, because they don't understand her, while she understands them all too well.
In the realms of romance and sex, Ari is equally practical. Love is messy, and lets the illogical part of an individual rule the decision-making process. She doesn't bother herself with it, if she can help it. Sex is for pleasure, pure and simple, and shouldn't have emotions attached to it if those emotions will end up costing one more than the enjoyment is worth paying for. She's made the mistake of falling for someone before, and in the end, it's never been worthwhile. Ari also has a definite sadistic streak, and a preference for much younger men. Sex can be used both as a bargaining tool and as a weapon, and she's done both in the past.
While she manipulates people as a matter of course, Ari will not go to great lengths to do so, and dislikes having to play nice to get her way. She doesn't do well with emotional people, and is brusquer with them than she is with others. She also has a short fuse when it comes to dealing with her inferiors, and her temper is legendary around her lab back home. Try as she might to control it and not let it get the better of her, it does from time to time, and can frustrate her planning considerably.
She's good with predicting the behavior or people in an individual sense or in a small group, but actually being put into large social activities unnerves her. At a large party or in a city, if unattended by a member of her personal staff, Ari's agoraphobia flares up quickly. Her reaction to unfamiliar places and situations can be severe, to the point where she hasn't left the Reseune facilities unaccompanied in years. In the beginning stages her palms sweat and her pulse picks up, and at its worst, she has full-fledged panic attacks.
Have you read up on how the game works?: The name of the plugin is Flaming Ferret, and characters can earn money by stealing, mooching off of others, or by actually going on missions and earning it yourself.
1st person sample:
[Ari smiles, and with that you know that she's up to something. She only lets her amusement slip like that when she wants to elicit a reaction. There are dark circles around her eyes, and what can be seen of her desk is littered with books and papers.]
I've got to agree with those of you who've said that sleep is overrated. The stimulants that are available on this vessel are damned effective, and quite marvelous in their own right. Much better than anything we'd even been able to develop at Reseune, and that's really saying something. I'm also appreciative of the fact that the library is open at all hours.
[She holds up one ponderous-looking book in particular, and the smile widens.]
It's made all the more marvelous by the fact that they have my book in stock--a book that I never got around to finishing back home, when there was still a home to go back to...
3rd person sample: "Of course I mean it, Councillor," Ari said, giving the younger man a tight smile. He was nervous, tugging at the collar of his shirt now and again, and would give in to her request any minute now. The desperate look in his eyes told her that. "In exchange for a 10% increase in budget for Reseune next term, Defense will get more operatives. There's a new line of training, one that's damned good, that I've been personally working out. I think that you'll be very interested to hear what we have to offer." She sipped her drink, awaiting his answer. It wouldn't do to let her impatience slip, by damn it, he was taking his time.
A long pause, some fumbling with papers. He'd been trying to talk her down to five, maybe six, percent. It wouldn't do, not at all. They didn't need the entire ten percent, of course, but if she could get it, it would mean that certain things could be funded better, get done faster and more efficiently. And from the sounds of it, this particular battle was just about done. "Ten," the man replied reluctantly, "though I'm going to have to sacrifice a couple of other things that were attached to the bill in order to get this passed."
"Then do it," she said. "Some things have to be sacrificed. Politics aren't a damned trip to the candy shop, sweet."
