3. Nature of the Work
Historians analyze, research, as well as interpret the past. In their research, they use many sources such as government and institutional records, books photographs, films, newspapers and other periodicals, interviews, and unpublished manuscripts. Usually, historians as individuals focus mainly on one particular period, event, region, or field (social, cultural, political etc.) of history. There are many different types of historians. Biographers gather very detailed information about individuals. Other historians study and preserve artifacts, archival material, as well as buildings and historic sites.
4. Working Conditions
Most have regular hours. Working is generally confined to behind a desk, either by oneself, or with other social scientists. Sometimes they must work overtime to fit deadlines or tight schedules. Social Scientists generally work as a part of a research team. Travel may be required for attending meetings and collecting information. Social Scientists working in foreign areas must adjust to different languages, customs, and climates. Social scientists employed by universities or colleges usually have pretty lenient hours. They divide their time between research, teaching, consulting, writing, and administrative responsibilities.
