I'm an incoming grad student (in English Lit) at WCU and I've got a room in the Village. I've been out to the area a few times, but I haven't really had a chance to do a comprehensive survey, so I thought I'd ask a few questions ( Read more... )

You wouldn't happen to be from the Bryn Mawr area, would you? Just curious. ;)

Ahh, the Villages. I remember them well.
The buses claim to run one bus every 15 minutes, but it's often more like 3 buses every 30-45 minutes. They are rarely on time and always overcrowded, unless you take them at "off peak" times, such as when classes have already started (for example, if you have a 9a.m. class and you want to take the 8:45 bus, that one will be crowded. But if you're just trying to get to north campus for the hell of it and wait for the bus at, say, about 9:10, that one won't be nearly as crowded). Walking isn't terrible, but it's about a 3/4 - 1 mile from South to North and in the colder weather, the walk kinda sucks.

A warning about the Villages...be prepared to see/hear cops there. Don't know about the rest of the people there, but we had cops outside almost every day (not my apartment, mind you, but in general). It's probably better that you don't have a car, cause you wouldn't be able to park it if you did. There's something like 1/3 of parking spaces to the amount of people living in the Villages. The school will tell you otherwise, but there is definitely NOT one per person.

There was a pnc on High Street, but they recently closed it and moved to another location. It's possible to get to one by taking the 104 down Route 2/West Chester Pike. Other than that, I suggest taking a look at PNC's website and looking up where their other locations are. Wawa is awesome because they don't charge you any fees to use their ATM, and neither does PNC, but you can't make deposits there, obviously. You can, however, use the ATMs at the school. They're downstairs in Sykes, on the ground level. There's no fee to make a deposit, I think.

There's a rite aid up the road on High Street. And I think you can take the Septa bus the 92 to get to on of the Acmes. Again, you can use Acme's site to get a location and use Septa's site to "plan my trip" and get the best bus route. A warning about the 92 as it is one of the most used Septa buses out of West Chester...it is often late and doesn't run very frequently. In fact, I think it doesn't run on Sundays at all. However, you can take the 92 when it is running to a Wal-Mart which I have found to be very very helpful. They have a pharmacy there and food, which helps. Of course, carrying it all becomes your next problem! ;)

Hope that helps! In case you can't tell, I've been in West Chester for a while, and I don't have a license, so I'll try to help you out the best I can!

PS: if you don't know the locations that I'm talking about, don't worry you will. ;) And I would be more than willing to give you more information should you need it.

From the city proper, actually, but just on the border to the Western suburbs. So "Bryn Mawr area" is accurate enough! Why do you ask?

I figured the buses wouldn't run as smoothly as claimed. But still, as long as I know I won't be waiting hours in the snow or whatnot, I guess it could be worse.

I saw the PNC on High Street listed on the internet, but I suspected it might not be there anymore. I guess I'll check out the other locations and investigate these no-fee ATMs. I remember passing that Wawa, so I will keep that firmly in mind.

Checking the various websites is a great idea. I've done a little bit of that, but I figured a little guidance never hurt. The 92 looks like it could turn out to be a very useful bus.

Thanks for your replies! You are fabulous and very helpful. I guess it's a bit silly, but I'm used to living in a city-- and near an El stop, no less!-- so I had a sudden fear that I wouldn't be able to reach anything without a car. Glad to hear that I was wrong. :D
