Brought to bear the greatest love, I carry a burden and a blessing.
Scene: In Angel Square, Destiny stands in the middle of a thick fog. Behind her a familiar figure. She feels his presence, hears his voice. She can't see him, but he can see her. At first unaware of where she is, a sense of familiarity overcomes her, she smiles and starts to speak to the air in front of her. The presences follows her as she paces around.
Remember that song I used to love, Matthew?
What song?
You know, the one that always reminded me of when we...
I don't know, you never told me that one.
But you can hear it now, can't you?
Yes.
---A beeping noise is heard in the background, a steady beat that gets slower and slower and slower and--- Her smile slowly fades, appears to be overcome with a sad revelation.
Why did you leave me, Matthew?
Des, you know I can't...
Tell me. Right. She sighs. I know...Its not fair.
But I'm always with you, Des.
Rolls her eyes. Just in my head, Matthew. Just in my head.
You'd rather I just disappear?
Her voice now sounds a bit desperate.
No! I...I want you there. Its just...I can't see you. Touch you.
No, you can't.
She starts to calm down. I feel that you're always around, though.
That's what I've been trying to tell you.
---The beeping noise slows to a crawl until it is one long, continuous beep and it fades away. She raises her brow.
Will you watch over him?
Always.
Will you always be with me?
Only until you forget about me.
But I won't!
I know.
There's something I want to tell you, Matthew.
What's that?
I never stopped believing in us.
I know.
Even when you were with Dani. I just couldn't let you go.
The figure looks to the ground before he responds.
Destiny, you were always there. You never gave up on me.
Because I loved you. When you love someone you stick by them no matter what.
The way I treated you. Like I just pushed you aside. It wasn't...God I wasn't there for you. Like you needed me to be.
But you're here now? The figure approaches her as she stares out into the distance.
You were all alone, Des. I wasn't there when YOU needed ME. I'm so sorry.
In an instant she can now see Matthew in front of her. She reaches for his cheek and strokes it, as if to contemplate if what she's seeing is real. His hands slide around her waist. He's in awe too that they can touch each other. They kiss for a few moments. Then, still holding each other she places her head on his chest and starts again.
I love you Matthew. I"ve always loved you. Even if you never...
I love you, Destiny.
She looks up at him and he smiles at her.
What and you're surprised?
You never said that to me before.
But I'm saying it now.
She lets go of him and walks away. Only because I wanted to hear you say it. It's all in my head.
Keep telling yourself that.
Turning to him she walks back to where he's standing.
That's all I've been doing! Telling myself that all I've been through was because of love. Thinking that we had something, that we...you and I...It's the only thing that's keeps me going and...
She becomes a little angry at him.
...and its a lie.
It's not a lie, Des! I care about you, you know that...
Care? Care? Look at me! Look at where I am, where I've been. You think I carried this baby because I just "cared?" Don't you see? I did this all for you. To have a piece of you in case you never...
I'm sorry I couldn't be there. It's not like I had a choice.
I had a choice once. To let this baby go. To not even carry it. This could all have been a dream.
Matthew approaches her and puts her face in his hands.
It's because you love me. That's why you changed your mind.
And was I just hoping that maybe, just maybe this baby could bring me closer to you? Look at me, Matthew. Really look at me. What do you see? Hmm?
I see my best friend, the one person in the world who's always got my back. The one I trusted with my life. The one who saved me. The one who brought me back again when everything seemed hopeless. He strokes near the corner of her eye with his thumb. I see the most beautiful girl in the world and she's in love with me. Even when I didn't deserve her, she wanted me. Was I blind? Yes in the beginning, but now? Des, do you even know when I started falling for you?
Yeah, the night we were together, our first time, we kissed and...
No. It was before that.
Confused, she steps away from him, thinking to herself when it could have been.
This was all in her head, right? She was making this up as she went along, wasn't she? This Matthew, this man in front of her, couldn't be real...right?
Maybe we still have a chance? Desperation overcomes her again and she starts to cry into his chest. Oh Matthew! There's so much I...
Shhhh. Des, don't cry. There's no more time.
She looks up at him.
He's waiting for you, Matthew. Please don't let him go!
Never.
Will you be waiting there for me?
I'll be waiting always.
Tell me that...
Everything's going to be okay.
You promise?
This I can promise you.
But you won't let him go, right? Not for one second?
Not even half.
She sighs again, relieved and rests her head again on his chest.
Thank you.
Matthew disappears and Destiny is standing alone.
He's here, Des! He's more beautiful than I...
Wait! She's frantic again, searching the fog.
No, no, NO, NO! Not yet... We'll be waiting, Destiny. Always.
--------------------------------------------
"Call it."
"9:07 pm."
Destiny opens her eyes. She lies on the hospital bed with oxygen running through her nose through a nasal tube. Her eyes shift around. She's tired, worn, almost as if she's been beaten. Bruised. Shaken. Too tired to be afraid, but too afraid to close her eyes again.
--------------------------------------------
Back in a rehab center in Philadelphia, Nora is reading a book to Matthew, who's still unresponsive.
Suddenly his closed eyes squint. He gasps, like he was drowning and managed to come up for air.
Nora doesn't notice. He starts blinking until his eyes are wide open.
"Mom?"
"Matthew?" his mother asks as she lets the book slide out of her hands to the floor. He looks over to her.
"Mom?"
"Oh sweety! You're back!" she says excitedly, but her voice is subdude as not to startle him. She grasps his hand and plants a kiss on his head.
"Mom? Where am I?"
Nora explains to Matthew what has transpired these past few months, but leaves out the part about Destiny and the baby. She doesn't want to overwhelm him.
"Destiny. How is she? How's the...baby?"
"Matthew, you know about the baby?"
"Yes." He starts slowly. "I...I knew, I just couldn't say anything. I heard it all. All of it. Is she okay? Is she here?"
"Honey, Destiny is...she's in a hospital in Llandview and, well, she'll be okay, it was just a little scare."
"Mom" he stares at her intently. "He's gone."
=======================
Destiny sat up quickly in her hospital bed, frazzled. It was all a dream.
"Destiny? Honey, it's Mama. It's okay, I'm right here." she heard a voice say. Destiny's mother gets up out of her chair and stands by her bed side.
"Where is he?" Destiny asked her with confused urgency, feeling almost like she had just come up for air.
"Baby," her mother starts. He's...gone."
"Mama?" She turned to her mother." Mama?! No...NO, NO!" Destiny starts to sob and puts her face in her hands. "Baby, they just...couldn't do anything more..." "NO!" she cried louder. "Destiny, the doctors did all they could. He was just..." "Oh Matthew! Why? Why did you take him from me?!" Destiny looked up from her hands and placed them on her lap. "Matthew, Mama! He's got him...he's got him!" "Its alright. He's home. He's with Matthew now." She lay her head back down on the pillow, tilted her head to the side and let out another sigh. Relieved. "He's home." "But Destiny. Matthew is alive. What are you saying?" Destiny looked puzzled. How could it be? Matthew was there, he had seen the baby, taken him away. Was this really all a dream? "Lord watch over him. And watch over my baby girl too." Her mother whispered as she looked up at the invisible Heaven above.
Fade to black.
