Summary: For my fanfic100 claim, The UCOS Team. Prompt 66 - Rain. Sandra gets caught in the rain and is less than happy with it.

Sandra had been standing in the middle of a field when the heavens opened. She had been talking to one of the suspects for the latest case - a chronically stupid man who spent most of his life sitting in fields smoking pot - when there had been an ominous rumble of thunder and it abruptly began to pour.

She let out a shriek of anger and surprise, and turned a withering glare on the man before her, who had the indecency to laugh. He paled in the force of her glower and scrambled off to find his own shelter. She squelched as quickly as she could back across the field to where her car was parked. Swearing loudly as the heel of her boot sank into the mud, she pushed her hair out of her face and scrambled into her car, muttering darkly as it coughed and spluttered into life.

Pulling off down the country lane, she cursed in her head the trio of old pests that had left this job to her. Jack, who was busy playing dot-to-dot on the whiteboard in the office, trying to make connections. Gerry, who was ‘getting to know’ the victim’s widow. Brian, who was sitting behind his desk rambling nonsense to his cactus because he’d forgotten to take his pills again.

She shrieked as a rabbit bounded out of the undergrowth from nowhere, and she swerved instinctively. The tyres slipped and skidded on the wet, muddy road and the car ended up going nose-first into the ditch beside the road.

She punched the steering wheel and pretended it was Strickland.

Sandra had phoned Jack nearly an hour ago, doing a very good job in hiding the fact that she was close to tears by barking down the phone at him that they were all idiots and that they should come and pick her up right now, or when she got back they would have to have their dentures surgically removed from their arses.

She stood by the side of the road in the mud and the pouring rain, shivering and snarling as she saw Jack’s car finally pull around the corner.

As it pulled up in front of her she was cut off from snapping,

“About bloody time!”

by the car doors opening and Gerry leaping out of the front passenger seat with a big, fluffy blanket that he wrapped around her and guided her into the back of the car, where Brian handed her a thermos mug full of steaming hot chocolate, while Jack twisted around in the front seat to give her a small smile.

She took a mouthful of the chocolate, feeling the warmth blossom out from her chest, and snuggled deeper into the blanket as they pulled off.

Maybe her boys weren’t so bad after all.
