Well, no mutants. Yet. I am several chapters into Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which is turning out to be about what I expected. There is a good deal of martial arts and gunplay, as well as some mild raunchiness that actually feels more out of place in Austen's world than the violence. Lizzy polishing her favorite musket? Fine. Mr. Darcy making puns about balls? Not so much. Aside from that I am enjoying it well enough, though. It is funny, which is the important thing. It's still better than Seducing Mr. Darcy!!!! (Believe me, nothing could be as horrifying that thing...) This one will probably end up shelved in the novelty section alongside the Lost in Austen Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book :p
Meanwhile, adding to the geektastic Regency fun, today I received the first installment of
Marvel Comics' graphic adaptation of P&P. The dialog is more or less verbatim from the original novel, with obviously necessary edits to condense the story (the Hursts are excluded yet again); while the illustrations are heavily reminiscent of the aesthetic of the Keira Knightley film, from the drab color palette to Mr. Bennet's mutton chops to Caroline Bingley's red hair. Probably all causes for annoyance to the Austen purists and Colin Firth fans; but as someone with a great affection for the 2006 film, personally I don't mind--it's a very cute comic! Issue #1 begins with a universally acknowledged truth, and ends with a very Brontëesque panel (seriously, it cracked me up) of Darcy watching Lizzy & Jane riding away from Netherfield in a carriage....I wonder what will happen next!?
