Victoriana Rules the Screens

Now that The Duchess has come and gone, I find depressingly little in the way of interesting gossip on the cinematic front. Looking over the vast wasteland that is the future movie releases for the next year, I find very few bright spots, particularly in the realms of costume drama. There are, thankfully, a small handful of promising projects centered around the historical figures and literary masterpieces of the Victorian Era (I suppose we've had our fill of Georgian & Regency for the time being?).

On the historical front, The Young Victoria, starring Emily Blunt as Queen Victoria and Rupert Friend as Prince Albert. I've mentioned this one before, but as I said, notable news is thin on the ground! No US release date is yet scheduled for this picture, but it should be on screens in the UK on March 9.

On the literary front, two well-loved and frequently adapted classics have yet another flirtation with Hollywood. Necessary? Probably not. Will we be watching anyway? Most certainly.

To the left--Mia Wasikowska takes the lead in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. To the right--Robert Downey Jr. stars in Guy Ritchie's upcoming Sherlock Holmes, co-starring Jude Law as Dr. Watson (thanks to glenvorian for the tip off on this project!). Rather brilliant bit of casting there; I can't wait to see what comes from this lineup...
