The Dreamscapes of Jean-Paul Avisse

Oct 29, 2013 16:55

If you took all the stylistic tropes of the 1980s and refined them down into one glorious fever dream, I think what you'd be left with is something resembling the work of late 20th century French surrealist painter Jean Paul Avisse. There is something about his paintings that speaks to the aesthetic soul of my childhood in much the same way as other cultural touchstones of the period, such as rainbow-maned unicorns, Jem, Lisa Frank, Labyrinth, and the Heartquest Dungeons & Dragons choose-your-own-adventure romance novels that apparently no one remembers but me. All of these things feel dated and somewhat cheesy to various degrees now, but I still try to love them with the least possible irony, though in some cases (*cough*Jem*cough*) it can be rather difficult.

At any rate, I genuinely love these paintings, and in your secret heart-of-hearts I suspect that some of you do as well. If you want to see more (I won't judge you!), I've compiled as much of Avisse's work as I can find over here on Pinterest.
