One more, since I am in that blue velvet sort of mood. I was fortunate enough to see this painting in person at the
Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Art and Design, 1848-1900 exhibition presented early this year at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC (I made the three-hour bus ride from Philadelphia several times to visit this exhibit!). The startlingly vibrant blue of Mariana's gown in the actual painting is one of the most remarkable things I've ever beheld on canvas. I know it's cliche to say that a work of art 'glows from within', but I really cannot think of a better way to describe that color.
Mariana was of course inspired by Tennyson's eponymous poem, which in turn was inspired by the character of the same name in Shakespeare's Measure for Measure. It is one of Tennyson's most lyrical works, very much in the same stylistic vein as 'The Lady of Shalott', and I've always thought it rather a pity that it has never been set to music. Granted, it would probably end up sounding rather like a funereal dirge...though considering this poem has always reminded me a bit of Poe's verse, that wouldn't be entirely out of place!

With blackest moss the flower-plots
Were thickly crusted, one and all:

The broken sheds look'd sad and strange:
