Obligatory Life On Mars/Ashes To Ashes post

It never even crossed my mind... until A2A series three. You see I fell in the ultimate Mary Sue trap.

Everything does not revolve around you.

I should have remembered that. But I can be very blind. But then again damn you Sam Tyler and Alex Drake; you were far too logical and I went along. Am annoyed at self!

So yeah, only when the directors changed the characters' perspective I got clued in. I saw similarities to Jareth and his Labyrinth, the Other Mother and a more tragic version of Doctor Who (in a "come play with me! look at how awesome my toys are!" way) and really this was the best part; having Gene Hunt as a potentially sinister but sympathetic figure who traps souls and is not allowing them to move on all the while symbolically referenced with the outdated era and strong aversion to modernization/change. And Jim Keats as a dislikeable good guy possibly Death or an angel helping souls to move on.

That's soooo not what happens.

The HUGE religious imagery coming from Keats (Ivory towers, descending from higher places dragging people down) was a nice hint! Thankfully I distanced myself from the theory in time for the finale. And WOW. Has ever a series finale been so incredibly brilliant? I liked my version but I'd probably be a little disappointed if they had taken that route and I'd figured it out too soon.

Jim Keats is working for the devil. He even has the evil government agent look down pat. BTW, Evil Is Sexy. I am seriously weirded out by myself because those glasses are nightmarish and ew! bureaucrat. In retrospect the fact that I thought he was sexy should have clued me in. Also, in my opinion Keats is a better villain than the Joker.

Poor Gene. He's the one who gets left behind and is definitely a straighter example of Doctor Who after all. Also, the fact that he's 22 years old makes him cuddly. Gene Hunt and cuddly do not belong in the same sentence.

What I still haven't figured out yet is whether Alex went back to 2008 in the end of series 2. Because if she didn't then what was the point of imagining returning to the 2008 world while she was in 1983 in a coma? Then again, wishful thinking? Or Keats' ploy to steal the souls from Gene?

Fucking masterpiece

But but the blond skinny bloke who claimed to be Sam Tyler, who the fuck is he?
