living space

I was having a dissatisfied-with-life moment, maybe having accidentally surrounded myself with too many people who are having extended dissatisfied moments, so I thought I'd make a list of things I miss about living in places that are not Singapore and see if it really is as long and irreconcilable as I always imagine it to be.

climbing on real rock.
hiking trails.
giant climbing gyms built in old warehouses.
roller-skating rinks with 80s dance music, built in same.
diners where I can get waffles. (I was going to write pancakes but irimi_addict makes good pancakes.)
being able to walk or bike to my friends' apartments.
house parties at Roxie's place.
good beer for relatively cheap.
abundant thrift stores.
secondhand bookstores with poetry.
reduced-rate monthly passes for the subway.
living on my own and having my own space. (This is an important one when your parents are pack rats whose stuff has exploded into your room. it's all well and good if they are at the same time dropping hints that you should move out, and popping into your room unannounced to pick up things, but I am also expected to live at home.)
good running and walking and biking weather.
my trail of wonderful friends strewn all over the world

things I do like that are possible to do/ find here (but that would be possible in most any other major city).

playing boardgames with friends.
going to the dueling piano bar with other friends.
being able to get food pretty much any time of day.
hookah bars.
japanese candy. takoyaki. bubble tea.
doing projects on my mom's sewing machine.
going to the science centre. (we did this yesterday and it was fun though we really needed more time.)
the kind of work I do.

things I do like that are possible to do/ find here that are impossible to find in another major city

my grandmother's cooking
volunteering at the Institute of Mental Health (because I have grown quite attached to my ladiez at ward 62)

but why are people here so dissatisfied in general? this puzzles me. I told H. yesterday that I think the way to maintain hope is to keep in touch with interesting, hopeful people. and I think the world is a better place with a drop of mischief in it, and that it's up to us to make our own mischief. now, does anyone want to open a roller disco with me?
