this weekend was a long weekend. friday was labour day. and what did i do on labour day? labour, of course. 7.30am to 11.30pm, with a short break (ok quite a long break) in the middle for the most delicious 4-cheese/ parma-ham-mozzarella-rocket thin-crust pizza i've ever had. cheaper than pizza hut, too.
saturday was errands-and-AWARE-EGM day. i sat through the whole thing. here are the quite rational reasons that i supported the old guard.
- they are more experienced. (when the new guard took over, they had zero experience with aware as an organisation, and had never volunteered, helped out, worked there...or known the full extent of aware's programmes. they were not informed on the legal issues that women of all stripes - low-income women, battered women, lesbian women, transsexuals - face in singapore. they may have never read the women's charter in their lives.)
- they stand for openness and information and choice.
- the new guard are a PR nightmare. i would not choose them to be the (disorganised, incoherent, and hopelessly media NOT savvy) face of an internationally-reputed women's organisation. it would have given women's organisations a bad name.
ok, that is all. i am glad it's over. i hope hope hope all these women who are now members of AWARE, now that they have made their voices heard once, continue to make their voices heard. that they get themselves informed on the issues facing women here. that they begin to volunteer on the helpline and at legal clinics and donate and help out at events.
today involved extreme laziness, cleaning my room, working out a bit, writing uberlong responses to sharlene's questions for an interview, and reading eugene o'neill. reading o'neill is always super-draining and emotionally exhausting. can i have a proper day off pls?
