I don't know about new clothes. But I started using the espresso machine at work, so instead of buying $4 worth of coffee a week, I buy $8 a month of beans, and I have it twice as often. Not quite as good, but hey, it's still wonderful caffeination, and I don't worry about that nasty taste that comes from chemicals leached out of paper cups.
Of course, buying an espresso machine would be another thing altogether...

good luck with that coffee resolution. i've been thinking about doing a similar thing and hoarding all my change for something fun. but the last thing i want to deal with on a workweek morning is brewing my own coffee. i wish you a lot of luck with that one!

"Look," I'd say as we were sitting on the beach, "babies." "Yes, dear," he'd mumble without looking up. "Dinner soon?" "Just one more chapter." Rinse and repeat.

Heh, I'm terribly guilty of that sort of thing, myself.

In order to finance future travel I'm resolving to go the next 12 months without buying any new clothes (and a separate resolution not to buy any fancy coffee on workdays...but we'll take that resolution one workday at a time). Folks: is this possible?

That depends on how many clothes you already have. I tend to buy very few (especially if you take t-shirts purchased at concerts out of the equation) but it would be hard for me to buy none because I don't have a lot to start with and some older things will inevitably wear out.

I can relate with the misanthropy. Sometime in the past year I realized that my ideal interaction with the average stranger is ignoring each other. I love being able to keep weird hours that allow me to use roads, restaurants, and public places at off-peak times.

I'll have to check out Lonesome Dove, though. If it allows anyone to ignore you, I count that as a powerful recommendation ;-).
