Eve was feeling quite pleased. Although she worried about how Samael would behave on their picnic outing in light of whatever had caused his personality to shift (and her to smell of apples, but she refused to think of that), from the moment they had met up after her class he had given her no reason to believe that her concern was warranted. In fact, she almost felt badly for assuming the worst about him despite knowing logically that she had every reason to suspect the archangel would act out after what had happened. Instead, their picnic had been as close to perfect as possible - the weather was fantastic, the food had been well-received, and if Samael was plotting anything Eve was none the wiser. She couldn't wait to get home and tell Gabriel and Michael all about how sweet and charming her company had been, knowing that Michael would be hard-pressed to believe that Samael's intentions towards her were anything less than suspect.
Shifting on the blanket, Eve smiled softly at Samael as she reached past him for the thermos so she could pour herself more lemonade. The action caused her knee-length plaid skirt to ride up on her legs, exposing her thighs slightly. Seemingly unaware, she pushed her hair behind her ears, a light blush painting her cheeks as she spoke. "I'm really glad you still wanted to come on this picnic with me. I must admit, I find it hard to believe you'd choose to spend a lovely Friday afternoon eating outside with me when you've got all sorts of other, more exciting things you could be doing."
~*~
Samael's eyes slid up the length of Eve's legs, though he kept his expression carefully bland. This was too, too easy. The girl was eating out of his palm. He smiled and knew that it was a gentle, warm smile. It was a smile to be trusted.
"I meant what I said, Eve," he said softly, plucking a blade of glass and twirling it between his fingers. "I do like spending time with you and it's pretty novel for me to make the most of such good weather." He shrugged. "I am usually busy but whether it's exciting or not is open to interpretation." He relaxed, leaning on one elbow. "You've spoiled me, I think. I'm going to expect this to be a regular occurrence now."
~*~
Eve's heart might have skipped a beat at the sight of Samael's smile, but she did her best to ignore that. She was waiting for Adam, and couldn't allow herself to be distracted by any kindly actions even on the archangel's part. She was sure he knew that, though.
"I know, and I need to just trust these things when you say them, Samael," she started, absentmindedly twisting a few strands of hair around her finger. "It's just... you have concubines, your family, and your job, and all of that seems far more interesting than I am." She knew her words could be considered self-depreciating, but from her perspective they made sense. "Spoiled you how? And you'll expect seeing me once a week, or picnics, to be a regular occurrence now? One is more likely than the other, weather-wise."
~*~
Samael laughed and it was nothing like his true counterpart's rumbling, cynical laughter; it was clear and positively angelic. "I have my concubines, yes, and my family and my job but that is not to say that I cannot have you, too, is it?"
He sidled just a little closer and raised his hand to graze the backs of his fingers over her cheek. "I don't know. Perhaps seeing you should be a regular occurrence, don't you think?" He grew very solemn but a little playful, too. "Do you think you could bear it? Seeing more of me?"
~*~
Eve blinked at the sound coming from the archangel, having had no idea he could produce such a tone; his laughter usually had an edge to it. "Yes. I mean no. I mean... You mean having me as a friend, right?" That had to be it.
Her face slowly changed to resemble a tomato at the brief contact. "I wouldn't mind, if that's what you're asking." Her nose wrinkled, indicating her mounting confusion. "Have I given you the impression that I find being around you unbearable? If so, that was not my intent."
~*~
"Of course I mean having you as a friend," said Samael, the lie slipping so easily from his lips. He took in the deep blush on her face and couldn't resist moving closer. Again, he raised his hand and this time he cupped her cheek and ran his thumb over her cheekbone.
He ducked his head, giving every impression of bashfulness. "Not at all, Eve. You've been nothing but kind and generous, even when I haven't deserved it."
~*~
"That's what I thought, just the way you said it almost seemed... nevermind," explained Eve, hoping he didn't decide to press the issue. Her breath caught in her throat when he cupped her cheek, causing her to stare up at him with pure shock reflected in her eyes.
The combination of that touch followed by his apparent embarrassment had her at a loss. "Oh Samael... We've had our moments where I was confused or upset by you, but you've always deserved my friendship."
~*~
Samael's smile was very sweet and his whole demeanour was anything but predatory when he leaned in for a soft kiss. His lips touched Eve's lightly. "We have had our moments, haven't we?"
He pulled back and looked up at her from under lowered eyelashes, his appearance suitably bashful. "I shouldn't have done that, should I? I'm sorry."
~*~
Eve's mouth had been open as she was about to reply to Samael's comment when he suddenly kissed her. She went absolutely still with shock at first, but had just started to respond when he pulled back. Her jaw dropped.
"You..." she gasped, unable to continue at first. She just didn't know what to say, but the contrition she could see in his posture and his words called for her to say something. "Why?"
~*~
"Why shouldn't I have done that?" One shoulder lifted in a shrug. "I wouldn't like you to think I'm taking advantage." Again, his eyelashes fluttered and he looked down. "I couldn't help it, though. I'm sorry."
Two apologies in the space of a minute and not an expletive in earshot. He chanced a glance at Eve's face. "I liked it, though," he said, so softly.
~*~
"Because!" All the reasons she had wouldn't matter to him. She knew that. "I didn't think that, but still..." Flustered, she stared down at her hands where they were bunching up the hem of her skirt. "You have nothing to be sorry for."
The quietly uttered statement caught her off-guard, as if she couldn't fathom that she heard that right. Her gaze flew to Samael's face before darting back down towards the ground. "I did too, but I know that I shouldn't have."
~*~
Samael looked at her hands too, for one heartbeat, then two, then three. He looked back at her and his smile was a little lopsided but entirely charming and apparently artless. He lay back then, flat on his back, and gazed up at the skies (oh, those clear blue heavens). Seemingly instinctively, his hand reached for one of hers and he squeezed her fingertips lightly.
~*~
Eve could sense that he was looking at her, the weight of his glance making her feel far warmer than she liked. She knew that she shouldn't feel so comfortable with him after he kissed her, that it was wrong when her heart should belong to Adam, and yet Adam wasn't here and Samael was. So when she felt his hand squeezing hers she laid down next to him, letting the fluffy clouds lull her into a false sense of security.
~*~
After some time had passed, Samael judged it the appropriate moment to raise himself up on one elbow and dip his head to kiss Eve again. Softly, sweetly, his hand just about resting on her hip. He smiled down at her and he was as radiant as any Archangel.
"It's a lovely day, Eve," he said softly. He kissed her again, nuzzling her cheek lightly, his breath stirring a stray tendril of her hair.
~*~
Distracted by looking for objects in the clouds, Eve felt movement next to her which she assumed was Samael shifting. Then he kissed her, again. She closed her eyes, instinctively kissing him back. Opening her eyes partway, she bit her lower lip shyly.
"You did it again, Samael," she murmured. She wrapped her arms around him, fingers curling into his hair as she sighed lightly.
~*~
"Did I?" And if Samael's expression was mischievous, it appeared to be entirely benign and maybe a little self-deprecating. "I can't imagine what came over me," he said, bowing his head again and rubbing his nose against Eve's. He wondered, this shadow, this darkness of Samael the Archangel, whether she would ever remember the truth about him in the Garden of Eden. Another kiss, perhaps, and another, each as gentle and undemanding as the last.
~*~
"You did..." Eve's voice was far too breathy for her words to carry any weight even if they seemed to be protesting his actions. "You need to stop doing this, it's not fair," she whined, pushing up in a weak effort to discourage Samael's efforts. She inwardly questioned why she wasn't fighting him off harder, unwilling to accept the rightness of the situation was because she had once long ago accepted his offer of temptation. Each little kiss was chipping away at her resolve until she was clinging to him whimpering quietly into his mouth.
~*~
Samael nodded. "I did. I can't seem to stop." Such a quiet little admission, punctuated by more and more kisses, his hand moving a little more boldly now. "Oh, Eve. What you're doing-” He pulled back just enough for her to see his eyes, wide with an innocent sort of confusion. He whispered, "how can I stop?"
~*~
Eve paused as she looked into his eyes, his words having the effect of a bucket of cold water on her libido. "I.. I'm sorry, I had no idea I could be like that." If her hands weren't otherwise occupied she'd most likely be flailing right about now. "Samael, I didn't mean to let things get this far. I couldn't help it, you kissed me and it was like my dream, but better, and I lost control." She was babbling, it was horrible.
~*~
Samael smiled and stroked her cheek before he rolled onto his back full, pulling her on top of him. It was a quiet corner of the park and he gazed up at her, his hands just resting on her thighs. "It is better," he said, shyly. "I promise that that this is better."
~*~
Eve wasn't expecting this type of response to her inane rambling, especially after he made it seem like he wanted to stop but couldn't due to how she was reacting. She was so dumbstruck that the placement of his hands didn't even faze her. "Are you sure? I wouldn't want to make you do anything you don't want to do," she exclaimed, eyes wide with concern as she gazed down at him.
~*~
"And I wouldn't want to make you do anything that you don't want to do." Another blatant lie but Samael's hand were roaming gently and a little possessively. He tilted his face towards her for a kiss.
~*~
"It's hard to think when you're doing... that." Whispered words came from Eve's mouth in a rush as she wriggled atop him to get more comfortable while trying to ignore the sensations his wandering hands were stirring up. She leaned down to meet his lips with her own.
~*~
Samael laughed quietly. He was rather pleased that Eve had kissed him so willingly and one of his hands rested on her behind, squeezing ever so gently. He parted his legs just enough to let Eve press tighter against him, to let her adjust to his rather physical reaction to her proximity.
"I think sometimes," he murmured. "Thinking is overrated."
~*~
Eve allowed her instincts to take over, the heady combination of emotions Samael was evoking inside her making her abandon rational thought. There was still that little voice in the back of her head telling her to stop before she and Samael took things too far, but she was listening to the louder one urging her body to just let it happen.
"You're probably right," she gasped, her mind already made up even as a question came to mind. "We've done this before, haven't we?"
~*~
Samael just smiled. He neither denied nor confirmed Eve's question, simply raising his hand to stroke her cheek gently. Whether they had done this before or not, he was going to make sure that this event was emblazoned on her memory for years to come.
~*~
Eve didn't think to ask again, the feeling of Samael's hand on her cheek banishing all other questions she might have. She was prepared to give him the one thing she had been saving for her (eventual) husband, and nothing could convince her this wasn't a good decision. Pressing her lips to his, she closed her eyes and swallowed softly, speaking into his mouth. "I'm ready."
