Bacterial meningitis, the doctor had told her. Though unsure of how Luca had contracted it, he'd put her baby on an IV of antibiotics to help cleanse his system. Her son looked so peaceful sleeping, but Hathor knew how hard his little body was fighting against the infection. A day earlier, he and the pretty blonde nurse -- Daniel, his name was; sweet guy and god had he looked familiar -- had conducted a spinal tap on her son, and she'd watched every moment of it, holding her sweetheart's hand.
Uncaring of how it might have looked, she'd crawled into Luca's bed, adjusting her body next to his while he slept, her hand running itself through his soft, soft hair. She'd cried the day before, unused to watching her baby so distraught by an illness, but now her eyes were dry.
Toward the end of the day, maybe she would risk another cry.
