Yay! The
Hugo nominees are out. Definitely excited to see what's been nominated.
Connie Willis for her Novella, "All Seated on the Ground". A very well done story about Denver, Choruses, Aliens, and Christmas. Even the DGMC gets a mention in there (but not DWC :( ) I gave a signed copy to Ann as part of the DWC basket back in November and bought the hardback for myself a few weeks later from SubPress. Go Connie!
I am really entranced by both the long form and short form dramatic presentations. There are so many good options in both. Like last year, Dr. Who gets 2 nods but has to compete with Torchwood and Battlestar Galactica. As to long form, I saw every movie and loved them all (yes, even Stardust which worked really hard against the banality of Michelle Pfeiffer)
Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form
* Enchanted - Disney doing a relatively good job of spoofing themselves and Amy Adams could give Glinda (Wicked) a run for her money.
* The Golden Compass - Awesome story, shame the movie cut out so many significant things. Overall though the effects were great, especially the daemons.
* Heroes, Season 1 - Unique concept for a TV show, captivating and compelling. I love the character Hiro.
* Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - Umbridge was wickedly awful and I enjoyed the on screen exchange of our main characters. Not my favorite of the HP movies to date but definitely worthy.
* Stardust - I really enjoyed this one. I love the premise and execution onto film. I still prefer the illustrations of Charles Vess, but I am biased like that. Claire Danes makes up for the color Pfeiffer lacks and who can't fall in love with Sir Ian McKellen's voice throughout? Oh and did I mention Rupert Everett is in it? A nice 'fairy tale'-esque story and somewhere along the way, you learn a lesson or 2.
Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form
* Battlestar Galactica “Razor” (televised version, not DVD) - I did not see this episode yet - its on my netflixx. But I have only heard good things about it
* Doctor Who “Blink” - Wow. This episode was awesome. And now I will always be wary of angelic statues, especially those with hands over their faces.
* Doctor Who “Human Nature’ / “Family of Blood” - I would say this mini story arc was probably my favorite from this season. You really get to see the 'human' side of the Dr in a way that makes you totally sympathetic for his plight while at the same time aware that he has a higher calling that he *must* go back to. Heart wrenching.
* Star Trek New Voyages “World Enough and Time” - have not seen this so I can't comment.
* Torchwood “Captain Jack Harkness” - Oh yes, Captain Jack. LOVE him! and his crazy personality. This the episode where you learn about the multifaceted Jack. John Barrowman is a multifaceted actor and worth watching.
The only nominated artist I am familiar with is
Bob Eggleton, who does awesome work. He was the artist GOH in 2004 at
Mile Hi Con.
Oh and I forgot to mention that we get to see them handing out the awards this year as World Con is here in Denver this year. Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
