Day 5...

Well, today is day 5 of my allergy elimination diet and boy have I learned a few things...
  • I realized the weekend before that I was starting this 2 days before Valentines. Oh well. I suppose I could have waited until after Shrove Tuesday and then kinda been on the same page as the Christians.
  • On my personal 'Shrove Sunday', I had a lunch of egg salad and a dinner of eggs on english muffins as I had to use up my eggs somehow. We also ate what was left of the ice cream. I gave the cheese and other products I couldn't touch for a while to Christine on Monday so they wouldn't go to waste.
  • I discovered a decent dressing that contains no vinegar or citrus or dairy. Mix 2 tbsp olive oil w a dash of salt, a dash of sugar, a dash of black pepper (I am not supposed to have black pepper but I told him I wouldn't do the diet without it.), and some finely chopped or mushed strawberries. The tang of the berries helps with the lack of acid and though its a bit bland, it is infinitely better than oil alone or even a dry salad.
  • Avocado on rice crackers is pretty decent except it would be much better if I could add a little bit of lime.
  • Though the Valentine's meal was blah, the dessert was great. I am able to and did enjoy 85% dark chocolate (cocoa, non-dairy cocoa butter, sugar and vanilla) along with some Raspberry Sobretto (water, raspberries, and sugar). One thing to note for future consumption - after eating the soberto, the chocolate became very bitter and almost waxy. Eat the chocolate first and then the soberto.
  • There are only so many ways you can fix the same meal before it become nasty and unappealing.
  • Its a good thing I like oatmeal.
  • It is also a good thing that I am not allergic to berries, grapes and apples.
  • I can't eat enough almonds to get the protein I need so I have had a low grade migraine for 4 days now and feel extremely tired all the time. (As a vegetarian, the only protein source on this diet I could eat was almonds)
  • Last night I had probably the worst meal of my life, aside from the allergy diet I had as an infant. No way can savory tapioca pudding with carrots and celery on top of rice flour biscuits be at all appealing. Tust me. Especially when you cannot add any savories to it.  I was pretty much defeated after that. But Thor got some more raspberry sorbeto so I was much happier.
  • I had enough with the lack of protein so I called my allergist. He wants me to add back in eggs and other nuts (no peanuts still) right away as well as dairy if it wasn't one of the things I am testing. (My dr was out and the other dr questioned whether my dr knew about me being a vegetarian. I said yes as we had discussed the soy bean allergy in detail. The other dr thinks perhaps my dr wasn't listening very clearly. I agree.) I am still testing for dairy so I can't add it back in but I can add in some butter in moderation as it tends to not have the same reactions that dairy products like milk and cheese do. The dr said since I've been dairy free for 5 days, if I do have a severe allergy to dairy, it would present itself right away at this point. So I should be safe. (crossing fingers)
  • I am very thankful to Thor for sticking with me on this diet. I did tell him while I wasn't around, he was free to eat other things but not to eat things I can't while in my presence. He's pretty much stuck to the diet even though he really doesn't have to.
