Toad has stated that this is sung from the perspective of James to illustrate his grief at Jesus's death and his dim view of Paul's role in building up a religious cult around his brother when in reality "he never even knew the man."

"like water through my hands / you'd give him any ending / but if he's all you said / would he fly from heaven into this world again?"

It's really quite a brilliant, poignant song told from the perspective of one brother missing another.
